I will say this...when watching SN4K...even when the program is not in 4K...it looks noticeably better than the regular SN channel...not sure why...perhaps they use an upconverter similar to how most 4K TV's can upconvert HD to something in between HD and 4K?
I do agree with you but perhaps perhaps it is your TV that is doing the updating? Just a suggestion.

Upconversion done by a broadcaster is superior to that done by a TV or STB. See the following FAQ:

Upconversion done by a broadcaster is superior to that done by a TV or STB. See the following FAQ:

It was true when you posted that FAQ almost 15 years ago, but the processors in today's STB's and TV's are so much more powerful than they were, that most do a very good job upconverting from HD to 4K. Some like Sony, LG and Samsung (and the Nvidia Shield) can do even better with their AI upscaling (depending on the material).

Are you implying that the upconverters in TVs and STBs are as good as the ones used by broadcasters? If they were, there would be no difference between 1080i signals shown on 1080i channels and those on 4K channels.

There is of course one other caveat. For the Service Providers that convert all signals to 720P for their HD channels, like Bell, that would certainly have a noticeable impact creating a difference between the HD channel and the 4K channel.

One other caveat: Rogers converts all incoming signals to 1080P for their "HD" channels on IgniteTV. I'm not sure what Shaw does for their IPTV service, but it may be similar because IPTV signals are usually progressive scan.

Therefore, the discussion regarding the variability of picture quality is not only dependent on the signal, but also the service provider.

Any chance we will see Masters in 4K from TSN?
I suspect not... as the main broadcasters of CBS and ESPN are only showing it in HD.
Direct TV only has a few holes in 4K, that are not part of the national broadcast.

NHL opening nights in Montreal and Edmonton, and apparently Rogers is still unable to produce 4K outside of Toronto.
The truck is shared with TSN as part of Dome productions and I guess they decided to keep it in Toronto as the Leafs have 4 straight home games coming up starting tonight. Dome productions has 2 4K trucks and I guess they decided against taking the other one to either Montreal or Edmonton.

Dome has three 4K trucks. 4K | Portfolio categories | Dome Productions

I think Dome has one 4K truck assigned to Western Canada and it's pretty well parked in Winnipeg, although they moved it to Edmonton for the IIHF WORLD JUNIORS last Christmas.

TSN 4K Broadcast Schedule - TSN.ca shows some 4K outside Toronto - CFL in Hamilton on Oct. 7 and NHL in Ottawa on Oct. 18. I don't think Sportsnet has a 4K listing.

Oh my. Two Winnipeg Jets games in 4K. That would be a treat to watch. Just not a treat to pay for since there are only a very small handful of 4K channels offered.
I get the TSN 4K, TSN2 4K, and SN 4K as part of my TSN/SN channels with Bell Aliant's offering of Fibe TV. Nothing extra required. The two TSN 4K channels only come on when there is 4K programming. SN's channel is always on. When there is a 4K broadcast the SN bug indicates SN 4K while at all other times it shows the logo of the regular HD Sportsnet channel so there's never any doubt about what you are watching.

Is there any way of knowing in advance which games will be in 4K?
That argument only supports what I wrote that Rogers was not ready to broadcast 4K for events outside of Toronto, does it not?
You may be right. According to the discussion in this thread about the last NHL season, the regional Winnipeg games were shown on TSN in 4K. When Winnipeg got into the playoffs, Sportsnet didn't show any of their home games in 4K. The truck was there, but Rogers didn't use it for 4K. Dome Productions is owned by Bell Media and Rogers Media, but I don't know how they allocate the use of the production facilities.

When I was looking at the 4K stuff, I noticed that TSN has a few more games scheduled in 4K on the TV guide than what they showed in the TSN schedule. When they took the second eastern truck on the road, they decided to do 2 Ottawa games, then Hamilton the next day, and back to Toronto for the Raptors and Argos (I think.) Here are the listings for the TSN 4K channel from Zap2it (all times converted to ET.) All the NHL games are regional.

Tuesday, October 18
NHL Hockey "Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators" 7:00 PM

Thursday, October 20
NHL Hockey "Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators" 7:00 PM

Friday, October 21
CFL Football "Ottawa Redblacks at Hamilton Tiger-Cats" 7:00 PM

Monday, October 24
NHL Hockey "St. Louis Blues at Winnipeg Jets" 8:00 PM

Wednesday, October 26
NBA Basketball "Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors" 7:30 PM

Saturday, October 29
CFL Football "Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts" 2:00 PM

Per the link in post 1 of this thread, and some earlier posts of mine (sample below), SN used to show the SN4K symbol beside any individual programme that was 4K (it meant scrolling through the schedule). I looked the other day when this question was asked and I could no longer find it. Perhaps someone with an interest can contact SN to see if this can be reinstated.

It is my understanding that home games for the Blue Jays, Leafs (and Raptors) are in 4K and occasionally something else. (I do not watch team sports, so someone more familiar with them will have to comment further.)
