The 6131 receiver and remote does not support UHF Radio Frequency so that is not the reason. Satellite remotes does use addressing codes so maybe something changed? i honestly dont know how to help you but maybe if you search for the web for posts about pairing the Sony A9G remote with a Dish Network receiver maybe you will have better luck? Dish receivers use the same hardware and remote codes as Bell receivers so maybe more people in the USA would be familiar with this problem and would be a better chance of you finding an answer?

Appreciate you trying to assist ... shall keep searching as suggested. Thanks.

I don't know if the "pairing" works via IR or whether it's an HDMI-CEC thing. If the latter, then make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled on both devices. Sometimes firmware can change things in devices that eliminate certain functionality.
Thanks for helping.

I followed thru this angle on the TV side ... Device Syncing ... and found just my HDMI2 device (a Sony Dvd player) listed but not HDMI1 which s/b 6131 .... which kind of explains the problem. It should have been listed if all of the hdmi1 handshakes occurred normally. I have removed/replugged both ends of the hdmi cable and even rebooted the tv.

Again, my 6131 remote recognizes the TV for on/off and channel changing.
my Sony remote recognizes and controls the Sony Dvd player connected to HDMI2 but not the 6131 on HDMI1 yet shows all channels viewable onto the Tv.

However when I go to the Bravia Sync (Sony's Cec identifier/setup) there is a message indicating "no hdmi devices" were detected. (I removed/unhooked my previously connected dvd player on hdmi2).

Is there a specific hdmi-cec setting on the 6131 (cannot find any reference in the user manual) or is the cec standard a given?

I am not familiar with HDMI-CEC and Bell. Rogers recently introduced it on their IgniteTV service. Someone more familiar will Bell will need to comment. When you are trying to get the Sony remote to work with Bell, it's really a Sony issue and you need to contact them for assistance. If you were using the Bell remote to control other equipment, then that is a Bell issue and most people can get that to work.

Perhaps someone with Sony/Bell can provide you with additional assistance

So I read up more on this. your NOT controlling the Bell Receiver with the Sony's Remote IR signals, your controlling it thru the HDMI wire via CEC protocol. Its very likely Bell receiver does NOT have support for HDMI-CEC functionality or at least the latest standard, and just a word of cation, if you call bell they will have no idea what your talking about. The Bell Receivers are actually made by Echostar in the USA and I'm guessing so is their software so Bell has probably very little say in the functionality and features of this.

Your basically controlling it by sending signals thru the HDMI cable from the TV to the Device, in your case satellite receiver, BOTH devices have to support the same spec for it to work, Your Sony TV does, however Bell does not list that as a feature of their receiver, so maybe it did work at one time, but with software upgrades, they can easily add and remove functionality to it at their discresion.

You maybe on the right track. The Sony A9G has an HDMI/Arc capability as well as one HDMI port EArc capable. I believe the f/w update (I suspect caused my issue) had some upgrade in this area to correct other connectivity problems. This is becoming a stronger case... since the 6131 is really a relatively old box.

Just want to spitball a thought here. My current AVR is pre hdmi era. I have been thinking of replacing it.

If I were to... and connect the 6131 via hdmi to the "new" avr (eg. a sony choice which would be likely sync-able with the sony TV) and then connect avr output hdmi to tv hdmi .... would this indirect connection likely mitigate the issue I am having now? I am thinking the avr cec functionality acting as a bridge between the TV and the 6131 re channel control ?
l am open to any intermediate box bridge solution if technically feasible.

can anyone with recent experience with buying an ehd for their 6131 let me know if I'm in the right ballpark with this item I came across ?

I'm not looking at spending more than 120 bucks but this is at least a start via amazon

I recently replaced old EHD on 6131. Went to Canada Computers. They had external HD box and sold me HD to put in it that fit the specs for Bell PVR function. I think it was about 50 bucks all in. They were really helpful.

SOLVED It does re-populate the timers

Hi, I was wondering, I have an external drive hooked to my 6131, are the timers stored on the HDD or on the receiver itself? Asking, because my hdd is currently failing/has failed, and am awaiting for a new drive to arrive this week. Hoping my timers will remain once the new drive is hooked up/

Since Bell is getting out of the SD receivers and the fact I still had a couple 3100 and 2700 receivers activated I was happy when I found an auction sale with a box containing multiple 6131 receivers for sale, I think I ended up with 12 receivers total all mint and remotes look like new. So I called in tonight to activate them to my account and replace the old ones and the lady told me the smart cards installed are old and they cannot be activated? We tried (4) different receivers, and she said the same thing for all of them

All of these 6131 smart cards start with S10 and she said that's how to tell it's old, some of the other receivers I have on my account have S02 or S04 or S06 so I would've thought S10 would've been newer? Either way, has anyone heard of this before? The lady seemed like she kindof knew what she was talking about, but immediately started down the path of renting or selling me some of their receivers... so I dunno, maybe she gets a bonus for selling receivers?

I can't seem to find any information on smart cards being too old or anyone having issues, so thought I'd check out a forum and see what everyone else thinks. Tomorrow I'll likely call back and try to talk with someone else and see what they say

Definitely possible but call back and tell them you want these receivers activated and if they tell you the same thing then have them send you out new smart cards. I did this with two receivers that I bought and it was no problem. No matter what they say they can definitely send out new cards.

Hi, I have a Bell 6131 receiver and I have a USB hard drive connected. After a long time with no problems, I’m getting this message, “The attached USB hard drive needs to be reformatted to support the Bell TV PVR feature. All existing data on the hard drive will be erased. Do you want to format the hard drive and restart the receiver?”

Does anyone know what would cause this to happen and if there is anyway to avoid the reformat? I have a lot of shows on the drive and I’m hoping there is some solution.

Thanks

It's me again. So, today the hard drive is working again. So, I assume the hard drive is wonky and will fail again in the near future. Would I be able to use a new hard drive for my upcoming recordings and use the old hard drive to watch my previously recorded shows. In other words, will the 6131 recognize different hard drives that are being used on the same receiver?

Thanks again.

I don't think that can be done though it might be possible. It could be done with 9000 series receivers but the 6131 is a different beast. I would first try checking the USB cable and replacing it using the shortest, best quality cable possible. Another thing that can fail or become flaky is the external drive power block.

Another thing that could be done on the 9000 series was to format a new disk and copy the programming files from the old disk to the new disk using Linux. However, that may make the old disk unrecognizable on the 6131 so the programming could be lost.

It sounds like the drive may have become corrupted. It may be possible to fix it by performing a check disk on the program file partition. If it can't be done on the 6131 then a Linux system (or Windows system booted to a Linux flash drive) might work. Again, it may interfere with the 6131's ability to recognize it but it's less likely.

2 things could be happening, the drive could have become corrupted, which could happen when it is trying to write and it loses power, this can happen even if you are not watching tv. or the second thing happened, they may have pushed a software update and they have enabled a different compression or more efficient file system on the external drive and in order to use it, it needs to be formatted, yes you will lose your recorded shows and movies, unfortunately nothing you can do about it

Help needed.
have a couple of 6131 powered down for a couple of months. Originally connected legacy Lnb and sw21s. Reconnected today with the Newer Lnb (dpp). Check switch went fine. Says smart card needs authorization (no channels). Had Bell send synch signal. No dice. Had them try a few time. Tried rebooting (soft & power) no luck. Agent said still saying active on their end.
any suggestions?
thanks
