The maximum used to be 2 Cisco PVRs and 6 Cisco STBs in the WHPVR system, but it now appears you can have at least 3 PVRs - Contact Rogers for limitations at your specific installation. Stand-alone STBs or PVRs can be "outside" the WHPVR inside your home. For example you can have stand-alone SA STBs/PVRs in your home, but not incorporated into WHPVR. Or Cisco STB/PVRs beyond the number allowed inside WHPVR inside your home.

You must contact Rogers to set up WHPVR and typically a home visit is necessary to implement as well as adding equipment

I have heard from a GOOD source the whole home pvr will be in Ontario in early to mid Feb. this will be a nice feature and can handle upto 4 cisco hd stb 1 of them having to be 8642 have a sleek new guide system very close to bells fibe tv and this will require a tech to visit house's to setup i do have alot of details about this (over 80% of techs have completed the course on this at this time) there is a fair bit of change over for this to be working in ones house
-A big down fall on this anyone that owns a 8300hd pvr or 4250 hd these boxes will not work on the Whole Home PVR there will be no software update to allow them to be on the system either
-Once a tech installs this in your home this will also not allow you as a customer to visit a rogers store to swap a modem of stb any longer
-currnet customers will also have to pay a onetime install fee to have this set up in there house where anew customer still gets the current free install

Filters

Thanks you Paolo and RSV007 for your reply.
If I may ask one more question, I have five boxes in my house 3x8300 PVR's and 2x 3200. If I wish too still use my 3200 will the filter affect them or should they be connected ahead of the filter. I know the 8300 must be changed for 8642HD PVR's.
Thanks again, as noted I am a rookie but this forum will be great help in my decision to go with the whole home setup.

I looked at pamphlet/web site and some one correct me if I'm wrong here but the way I read it you can have

2 HD PVR boxes
6 HD boxes
8 boxes in total cpnected to this network.

Correct?

This Whole Home PVR appears to be only gor HD?

If you have a 8642 PVR but 3200 SD boes your out of luck. So basically need to have all your boxes HD regardles if you have HD TV at home or not.

So if you have 1 HD TV but the rest iofyour tvs are SD TO BAD you can't get the service.

The SD terminals do not support any networking features and manufacturers such as Cisco and Motorola aren't putting much R&D into SD terminals these days to bring updated features such as home networking as its becoming increasingly difficult to buy an SD television these days.

Remote tv manager support for 8642 pvr?

Any idea if this new update for the guide and whole home pvr will finally offer support for the remote tv manager for the 8642 pvr?

I just swapped back to the 8642 so I am ready for the update. I previously had the 8642 but then swapped to the 8300 to get the remote tv support.

Thanks in advance,
AK

yyzlhr: Even if they did come up with a solution for home networking with the old boxes (the E940 lists "multi-room DVR capabilities" in the product brief), without an MPEG2 HD decoder it wouldn't be able to play most of your recordings!

For those who tested it so far, does it make use of the Ethernet port on the back of the unit? Since it uses MOCA technology, you should be able to say, plug in the 8642 to your router and the coax network would bridge your network so you could connect your PS3 to the back of your 4642. If you have additional MOCA adapters, they are all suppose to be able to connect to it as well (as explained by the folks at CES who demonstrated MOCA technology) http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=192

one question?

So whats the difference between this one (Ontario Whole Home PVR) and the one in Maritimes, other then the one in Ontario is cisco based and the one in the Maritimes is Motorola based?

Is one(Ontario vs Maritimes) features better then the other?

If so what are the diffrences?

the filter goes @ the point of entry for the boxes you need min 1 hdpvr 8646 and up to 3 cisco 4642's per network if you have more than 4 cisco boxes will require a 2nd network to be set up each box on the network works ONLY in that network sa boxes will not work on these networks and will require a filter on them aswell so they can function properly!

Rogers is going to hear it from me if they want me to pay $50 for the Whole House PVR function. When I first got my 8642 and 4642 from Rogers, they told me that by getting those two units I was going to have that feature coming soon. I specifically was told at the time it would not be something I had to pay extra for. So this will get interesting.

I don't like the $50 whole home PVR fee. They're releasing the new guide sluggish and we have to pay a fee if just want to use our own PVR's we already have?

#71 ·
The $50 is to cover the cost of having to send a technician out to your home to install the filter that is required for the Whole Home PVR function to work.

If you don't like the fee, you can continue using the PVR functions on the TV set that the 8642HD is hooked up to. Rogers is in no way forcing you to pay the $50 for the extra feature.

I also suspect that the fee can be "waived" just like other installation fees if you deal with customer retention. It's purely speculation so don't quote me on that.

What filters do they need to install?

I'm assuming that the WHPVR function just uses a specific chunk of free spectrum that the remote units get their content on. The only reason I can see for needing a filter is that the chunk of spectrum they use will go back out onto the line through the bidirectional splitter that they have already installed.

I was under the impression that those already filtered/block some of the higher bands already. If that is not true then I can see why a filter is needed. Otherwise it is just a cash grab by Rogers, which of course is not surprising.

Can anyone confirm will this system work on the 8300???

Little pissed off, that they have yet to fix my original problems with the 8300 and there "External PVR Expander" 1TB Seagate Drive....(where I lose recordings weekly) while its plugged in. This has been occurring for over a year, to the point where I don't use the (external drive) $200+ item I bought from Rogers.
P.S. this system worked flawlessly before the Firmware update 2 years ago.

Back to the matter at hand, can I get this system to work on my 8300 when its available here in London Ontario region? or will I need a 8642 model. AND if I get an 8642 model added to my house, can I still use the 8300 with it.

Thanks

P.S. typical rogers to not fix something and go to something new, so people have to spend more!!!

Feature Activation

When the tech comes to your home to install the filter. Does he have to activate the Whole Home PVR feature on each device? If not when they rollout this out wouldn’t your recordings start going out over the network, if the filter was not installed. Especially if you don’t subscribe to the Home Feature.

57, if you are still in control as a moderator, can you please split out the discussions on the new IPG into its own thread (ie, separate it from the whole home pvr thread) ?
Done, please use the following thread for firmware IPG discussions and use this thread for whole home discussions.

It may have been asked here but I don't recall seeing an answer, but since the 8300s will not support Whole Home PVR, is Rogers going to upgrade existing customers who rent (or, like me, are on a rent-free-for-life deal)? Do they still replace rental units with recycled 8300s or have they run out now?

The one thing I don't understand is if there are still tones and tones of 8300's out there why didn't they updated as well, I say this because Cisco updated the Scientific Atlanta's 8300 which is now owned by Cisco, IF they wherent providing service for any of Scientific Atlantas products then why did they support the 8300 at all? It makes no sense to only update one box, all of the boxes should at least get some type of guide enhancment, but again most likely just blowing steam....
