Sony BDP-S370 available at Futureshop

I saw the Sony s370 in Futureshop today... it must have just became available for sale within the past few days. Looking at it, and comparing it to the other blu-ray players on the shelf, I gotta say it is small! I'm glad Sony dropped the "front door panel" from last year's s360. The power, play, stop, and pause buttons sit on a "lip" that extends from the bottom of the player. This unit includes 2 USB ports (front + rear) and an ethernet LAN port (rear). The Sony BDP-S370 is currently priced at the MSRP of CAN$250.

I just setup the BDP-S370. I must admit I'm impressed. As soon as I powered up, it went through an initialization wizard, then it connected to the internet, found the latest update, went through the update process, and once rebooted, it found my HTPC and my two other Windows 7 PCs. I could stream media content from any machine easily. I really like the DLNA feature. :)

I bought mine for $129.00 (USD) from Amazon in the US.

--370 Overview

the 370 is a much better player than others in the same price range of different manufacture...

my friend and I have tried various manufacture machines as well as tried various drive and file system configurations.

of all the units that I had tested in regards to all of what ever else could be used via the Ethernet port... im not really looking at playing a Blueray as many units will do the same thing at the end of the day..

It will work with External USB HDD's and USB Sticks.
In our testing a Retail Plus 32GB stick was used as well as a Powered USB HDD (LaCie) which has a Hitachi Death Star Drive in it... 1TB in size..

the file system has to be FAT32 and many simple utility will preform the task of formatting the 1TB drive as fat32, to go beyond the usual windows limitations ect..

ideal for music and photos, and other media formats you may have in digital form..

The Online apps are very nice and all work rather well.

overall operation as well as file support for music, photos and video, was very good.

Despite all the great internet content built in to the unit even with a firmware update (via internet) the unit does not have 'Netflix' at this specific point in time or atleast in canada... ( I would expect a future update to have this feature )

of all the units tested, and for the price, as well as internet style application support.

it was the best unit (online apps and file support)

its menu interface is standard across all sony's new products, same as a sony PSP, or even a New Bravia TV. Actually use of the BD players in this series combined with any new TV, give the same operational abilities as a Bravia set with internet. ( you just did not have to spend $2900 to have the same feature built into it.. )

im a very demanding customer, and honestly im not really into movies and such so BlueRay itself holds little value

I see much potential for product in this series for anyone considering purchase of a BlueRay Device... (Average Consumer - This is a great way to go)

its a much better unit than the samsung 5500 hands down.. in regards to file support and online apps at the present time.

( Although they do not have Netflix at the moment... I would expect it shortly.. sony has good support and is clearly shown with this product as well

usual futureshop / walmart under $200

Future shop $168.00 out the door in newfoundland canada $192 taxes in

Oh I almost forgot to mention...

Do you have a spare USB Keyboard kicking around?? because if you do, you can also plug in a keyboard. what this means is, for the online stuff, lets say as example you wanted to search for something.... you can do it on the wireless remote the same as you would prehaps enter a text via the telephone keypad.. same T25 type input... so if you do not like clicking numbers to make letters etc... you can just enter them directly with the keyboard... nothing special, just the typical $9.99 Walmart USB Keyboard will do the trick.

thats about all i can say about the product, if your opinion varies thats fine, but of everything that I tested, it was the best bang for the buck.

Big thanks to the sales people at walmart and futureshop.

the biggest help was futureshop, because they let us hook up pretty much every BD device they had in the store on display.

After I was done, the sales rep had a much better understanding of the features of the various products.

I can also understand now why as well, when I had spoken to Samsung, I had asked a Rep what he was using at home... his comment was that he was NOT using a samsung product.. but when the pepsi man drinks CocaCola that dont sound too good to me... Its not a Samsung Slam... its just the facts.

and yet one other thing... The sony worked flawless with one of my MP3 Players.. simple stick style from france.. pluged it in and it worked... all file names were visible and easily selectable... the samsung would not display correctly file names ( would display junk characters instead of file names, and you could not read and understand it.. )

-- Netflix for sony products

Spoke to a rep at Sony Canada 'Nathan' (thanks for the nice chat..)

I was informed that the NetFlix is to be released for all current Devices that support Internet Video, BD Players.. Tv's ect...

IN 2011

thats the info direct from Sony in canada...

he was suprised when I told him that the samsungs already have netflix in canada...

' 2011 is the release date at this time for internet video devices to have netflix ' ( Official Comment from Nathan at Sony Canada)

I will also contact Netflix and see what they have to say... but from my previous conversations with them, it is the manufacture that supports the updates, and is specific to their products.

-- File System Support

There is something else that I would like to point out in relation to the Sony Lineup...

Although you can use various media sizes for storage of music and other data, it has to be a FAT32 File system... (NO NTFS Support)

You can format a large drive to FAT32, beyond the normal physical limitations of fat32 partition sizes, eg 500GB or even 1TB.. but you would have to use a special formatting utility...

Which is kinda ok... HOWEVER..

If you have certian File Sizes... which are or could be greater than 4GB, they will not work on a Fat32 File system...

I found this out after Expiermenting with Large .MKV files as I was trying to make a HD Fishtank... it was larger going towards 5GB...

it Did not work on the Sony BD units.. (However Sonys will play .MKV)

However.. on a LG BD unit, which supports NTFS, works fine as NTFS supports files greater than 4GB

To put it simple... Sony's do not have NTFS file system support...

you can work around this either by Splitting files into multiple pieces that are above 4GB or convert them to lower quality within the 4GB / file limit.

The only other option is to add it as a media device on a LAN and have something to stream from.

( I dumped the unit and switched to something that had NTFS Support)
LG 5xx & Samsung 5xxx support NTFS File systems on the fly...

Disappointing that it doesn't yet support Netflix in Canada

We found the S370 at a US retailer for $79 and bought one. It's a nice unit, but the lack of Netflix support in Canada is disappointing. All I got from Sony tech support were assurances this would be available "at some point in the future." Learning that this will be "in 2011" is scant comfort. When is that: late January or early December?

Since Netflix support is available now in the US with the same firmware, it must be a matter of tracing the IP address to a Canadian ISP. This is going to force me to fool with trying the several anonymizers that use a proxy server to spoof the device into thinking it is connected to a US ISP.

I hate to do this kind of thing (I try to be a stand-up guy), but I'm getting tired of being behind the "Maple Leaf Curtain" in "Canuckistan." Absolutely the only reason for not having this feature available now is to satisfy the lawyers.

Not a gamer

Yes, PSP and Wii both stream Netflix in Canada, but I have no desire to buy a game console. I'm stuck playing the waiting game for my Blu-ray player to have the features they advertised. It's just another instance of being stuck behind the "Maple Leaf Curtain" in "Canuckistan." Who would have thought the Hollywood lawyers hold sway in Ottawa, but they do.

BDP-BX37 and Windows 7 working for me. I made sure device was registered with Sony & updated, set up dnla server app on laptop. Rebooted blu ray and computer and grabbed a beer and voila..... it actually worked! Not all file types are supported (see manual) and the file structure seemed cumbersome, but it works none the less. Wish it had Netflix capability though. Youtube looks much better on it than on the Wii (HDMI ???P vs. 480p component). Guess I'll have to live with Netflix on the Wii for now.
