Roger Daltrey To Perform "Tommy" live in concert (tickets onsale May 19th)

Roger Daltrey will perform The Who's legendary rock opera TOMMY in its entirety from start to finish. (The Who never actually played the complete TOMMY .)

Daltrey premiered the show at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust on March 25 and is now taking it on the road.

Tickets for the AEG Live-produced tour go on sale Thursday, May 19 for Canadian performances.

The six-week tour launches September 13 in Hollywood, FL and concludes November 2 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB .

A 1989 tour by The Who saw them reprise TOMMY live. The upcoming DALTREY tour will differ in that all of the album's songs will be played in sequence.

" TOMMY , an album that tells a story about a 'deaf, dumb, and blind boy' who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, will always be seen as a turning point for the band," says DALTREY. "Within it, I found the new voice of The Who and the band found its stride in making that music, adjusting it, using all that knowledge that we had from jazz and the blues into making it work in a rock way."

I saw the very first of the Who's "final" concert at MLG long ago. Lots of fun.

from wikipedia talking about MLG
The Who performed what was supposed to be their last concert in December 1982 at this venue and was filmed for the concert film The Who Rocks America (1982).
I then saw them at their next "final" concert at the CNE.

I didn't bother going to anymore final concerts!

I recorded that first "farewell" concert that was broadcast and distilled it down to 2 cd's when the technology to do cd's made it into the home.

Some truly amazing music there.

Hugh, that CNE concert, was that around the time of the release of the album by the Who that had "Eminence Front" on it? If so, I was there too. :) Quite cool and damp, but the music was fantastic.

I have been to a couple "final" concerts as well. Tommy is one of my favourite albums...

BUT...who is playing lead guitar?

edit: googled it

Joining Roger will be Frank Simes (guitar), Scott Deavours (drums), Jon Button (bass), Loren Gold (keyboards) and also on guitar will be Simon Townshend, younger brother of The Who’s guitarist Petet Townshend.

The trip has Pete’s blessing. “Great to see Roger performing Tommy with his band in 2011,” said the guitar icon. “I will be there in spirit and Roger has my complete and most loving support. Roger is touring his unique concert version of Tommy using his faithful presentation of the original work as the backbone for a set of wider material. It is wonderful to hear the way Roger and his new band re-interpret the old Who songs.”
Nice to see that Townshend supports the project...it was his masterpiece afterall.

I've been a rabid Who fan since the early 70s. I snuck down to Toronto while in high school to catch their MLG show from their last tour with Keith. Haven't missed a tour since.

It's been a great ride with all the amazing shows and bumps in the road over the years. I'm interested in what the thinking is about what Rog's tour means for The Who.

I took it mean that this, finally and really, was it for the band, particularly when I saw that Rog is essentially duplicating a Who tour path for North America (his venue choice is, IMO, incredibly ambitious, even if most of these are 'concert bowl' configurations). It must mean that Pete simply can't or won't strap on the guitar again for a tour.

It's probably the right decision. No matter how much the core fan base wants them to just keep going on and on, there comes a time for everything to end.

Rog, "be lucky" mate. I'll be there in Vancouver and I hope you sell out every seat.

I remember when they played CNE 82 and Joe Jackson was booed off the stage. They announced they would do their final show at MLG in Dec. 82. (16&17). I've seen every Toronto gig since then. I love them! but its been down hill for a few years. Roger's voice just can't handle those old Who tunes any longer.

I also remember going to see Tommy downtown (the movie) when I was really young and being totally freaked out (I didn't really get much of it)

One interesting note was it was the first time I ever sat in a movie theatre in a total haze of marijuana!

Just a heads up for those of you in the GTA or Windsor. CATCH THIS SHOW!

Saw the show at Scotiabank Place last night and was very impressed.

Rog's voice is a little rough at points but seemed to improve over the course of the night. Very talented band with a great interpretation of Tommy. Although I don't think they should have excluded the Underture. 'Fiddle About' does not flow properly into 'Pinball Wizard'.
The "F*ing around" (as Rog put it) portion of the show was also brilliant with a great selection of songs.
