Returning equipment

I recently cancelled my Bell FibeTV and internet service. On the call I was told that I would get boxes and shipping labels sent to me for the returns. Instead, I got return labels and instructions to provide my own shipping materials. On top of that, the modem is shipped by Canada Post and the TV receiver by Purolator.
I called in today to inquire and was told that I could just drop off the equipment and Canada Post (or Purolator I supposed) would box it and certify that it was returned undamaged.
I'm concerned of the boxes being damaged during shipping and then having Bell come after me for the money.

Has anyone else have to deal with this yet? Apparently this change was just instituted.

Has anyone tried just dropping off the box without any shipping material? I don't really want to pay to get bubble wrap and a box. I'm cancelling my service and don't want to spend any more money on Bell.

just put it in a box with news paper ship it back to them. that's why they pay for shipping if it gets damaged they will go after the shipping company. I wouldn't worry about making it pretty or anything but just make some sort of effort to box it.

I got a big envelope by Purolator the day after I confirmed to them I was leaving. Inside was a box for the PVR, a padded envelope for the second STB and a smaller padded envelope for the special box that connected them. Nothing for the modem. A day earlier the CSR had told me how that modem was discontinued and how they would give me the new one rent-free (to keep me). So I figured it was discontinued, so they had no use for it.

This was Tuesday, Rogers came and installed on Wednesday, and later that same day I dropped everything off at the Purolator counter. Monday rolls around and it's garbage day, and the modem is leaning against the wall near the garage door. You can guess what I did.

That evening, I get home and there is a letter in the regular mail with instructions on how to return the modem. And step 1 wasn't to go to the dump and find it.

Canada Post will very rarely damage goods and I would not be worried. The important thing is to keep the tracking No. or any other proof that the Return was done so they don't come after you years later with unpaid rental equiptment fees.
