Just switched from Rogers to Bell. 1gig fibre to home, Homehub3000, 1x 4kpvr, 2 x VIP2502. Both 2502s seem to have an issue connecting to 1080p tvs via HDMI. The STB resolution test shows 1080p ok and tv source input shows a 1080p input signal. Once selected, however, a blue screen blinks very briefly on the TV saying that the STB and TV have a communication issue and suggest a reboot, new HDMI cable, etc. The 2502 immediately reverts to 1080i output as reported by the TV input. Works fine at 1081i and good picture quality. Tried on 3 different 1080p HD tvs, used several high speed HDMI cables. Always same result. Bell install tech puzzled. Should the 2502 interface to the TV at 1080p??
Thanks.

Make sure the firmware on the TV is up to date. These sorts of handshake issues are not uncommon. Since Bell sends all signals to the box (outside of on-demand) at 720P, you may wish to consider that setting anyway, unless you watch a lot of on-demand movies, which are just about the only thing sent as 1080P.

If you can, try the following:
  • different HDMI ports on the TV
  • swap ends of the HDMI cable (TV end to box, box end to TV
  • reboot box, etc.

It sounds like the TV connected to the 4K PVR at 1080p works in that mode, but the same TV connected to a 2502 reverts to 1080i - is that correct?

Are all the TVs the same brand?

Does the connection revert to 1080i when you watch a TV channel or does it happen even if you are in a menu, when there is no TV channel playing?

The 4k PVR connects to a brand new Samsung 70" 4k Tv and is set to 4k. That Tv shows a 3840x2160 input signal regardless of tuned channel content. Assume that means the 4k box is scaling up the 720p to the UHD resolution. The two 2502s connect to a Vizio E70-C3 (about 3 yrs old) and a Hisense 50" 4k (about 1yr). All the tvs are on Wifi and indicate their firmware is the latest. As you suspect, if the STB is on a menu or a VOD channel preview, the Tv shows 1080p and will stay at that. As soon as a regular HD channel is selected I get the flash error message and blink back to 1080i. I have not tried a 2502 on the big Samsung but will do so. I know regardless of the interface I'm only getting 720p true resolution but if the 2502 can only upscale to 1080i then everyone with a 1080p or 4k tv should see the brief error message; yet the Bell tech seems perplexed.

I am not familiar with these boxes, however, do they have a specific setting option for output video resolution, or do they have an "auto" setting as well. If they have "auto" and that's what's causing the problem, then use the 720P or 1080P setting instead for the affected 1080P TVs.

Does the HDMI cable go directly from the 2502 to the TV, or are you using an AVR?

Are you getting the exact same message on both TVs? That would confirm the message is generated by the 2502 and not by the TV. Can you give us the exact wording of the message? Sometimes a Google search will find similar problems.

I've tried it with an AVR and direct. No difference. Both TVs and both 2502s give the same error message.

This message appears very briefly. I had to photo it to capture and read. Indeed the 2502 boxes have an output setting menu. You select the max resolution of your tv monitor up to 1080p; it runs a short test to prove compatibility. Note that while the test is running, the tvs report a1080p input.

You should be able to solve the problem by connecting the 2502 directly to a different HDMI port on your TV. The ARC ports on many TVs are known to have problems with HDCP (Copy Protection). I think that's what the H1001 message indicates. HDMI MHL ports often have problems as well. Let us know if that works.

If you want to use the ARC port, you will probably have to use a different resolution.

No joy on any HDMI port on any of the Tvs. I've tried several short high speed cables, four different ports on one tv and three on the other. Both tvs are less than two years old so should support HDCP handshake. And would not an HDCP failure block the picture not roll back the resolution? And both 2502s behave exactly the same way with all the tvs. Its looking more like ExDilberts suggestion that it is a firmware or hardware issue with the 2502s at work. The plain cardboard boxes they arrived in (recycled hardware???) are labelled "Firmware 3.2.34263.5005" and "Date packed 5862.8.18" . Guess I'll ask Bell tech to bring a couple new receivers, hopefully from a different batch, and try that. Or just live with 720p output and let the tvs do the scaling. Love to hear if anyone else has experience with these 2502 boxes.

"Date packed 5862.8.18"
That's the problem right there. These receivers probably probably have HDMI 1862.2 and all your ancient TVs are incompatible with receivers from so far in the future. Never mind that they are expecting 40960x20480x20480 3D holographic TVs with 25.5 channel surround sound. ;)

Sorry to lead you down the wrong track. I was certain that was the problem. Bell can update the firmware remotely if that is the solution.

I have the non-Wi-Fi version of the boxes and I double-checked - I had it set to 1080p all along and it works fine.
