The MPEG-4 shift in Augusta follows other technology decisions made by cable operators that have impacted TiVo. The use of switched digital video by operators such as Time Warner Cable, for example, require that TiVo boxes with CableCARDs to also be paired with separate Tuning Adapters to ensure that they can access channels in an MSO’s switched tier. But that kluge may be fleeting, as TiVo has recently developed an “embedded” way of supporting cable SDV without a Tuning Adapter that relies on updated client software and some additional work at the cable operator's headend. TiVo originally developed that for BlueRidge Communications, and plans to do the same for Cogeco of Canada.

Cogeco TiVo Announcement

Apparently Cogeco is about to announce something to do with TiVo. Probably TiVo licensed pvr/tuners.
Does anyone have additional information?
This could be fantastic for Cogeco because their present software/hardware is extremely out of date and obsolete compared to Bell TV/Fiber and especially US cable providers.
I hope that Cogeco has invested significant resources ($) to upgrade or even surpass their competition.

The announcement was made this morning. TIVO arrives as of Monday. I already called, but they dont have the system ready yet to even book install appointments. Was told to call back Monday. Gave them feedback that if they're making a huge media announcement, they may want to have people trained already. Nobody knew what was going on over there.

Am I dreaming?

Also YouTube integration.
Whole house viewing; 1TB hard drive and ability to record 6 shows on the pvr.
Was told the pvr will be $20/mth and $7/mth for each separate tv.
All the usual TiVo software like thumbs up.
I need to know exactly what model TiVo pvr they are going to use.
Will the cable guide be able to tell when a program is running over like a football game and adjust the scheduled recordings accordingly?

Does anyone know if a Cogeco Technician HAS to come out and hook up Tivo, or can I just get one at a Cogeco Storefront and hook it up myself?

Also does anyone know if you can buy a Cogeco Tivo, or are they rental only?

Bah, I was hoping it wouldn't cost anything extra. I was already considering dumping my DVR because of the high price, so $20 a month isn't doing it any favours.

Any word on whether or not Cogeco intends on improving their existing software?

Competition

Cogeco really needed to improve their tv standards and applications.
Bell Fibre is going to be available in most areas soon and it is fantastic in every way imaginable. Bell's poor public relations and high costs are going to impede their growth and profitability.
Cogeco's licensing TiVo boxes is a step in the right direction but this was not their initial idea. They spent $30million developing their own platform but it was scrapped in favour of TiVo.
Also the "cord cutter" movement is gaining momentum now that antennae companies have their own pvrs and software.

The hype is bigger than what is needed. While it is nice they are offering TiVo, I would think they would be trying to increase the HD programming content they offer first. We are considering leaving Cogeco TV not because of the boxes they have but because of the programming that they don't have. Indeed, with the increased programming, it may be more advantageous to get the TiVo as well, since it records many more channels. Right now, though, it just isn't worth it.

What impact will this have on the TV Packages? Already gonna hit you with a $28 hike for 2 boxes..im sure the packages will go up in price and when will they get AMC-HD? Im not convinced to jump ship and go the way of Bell Fibe...but it does look more enticing in whats offered then what Cogeco is offering
