Bell 6400 won't recognize switch. This is a receiver bought used on Kijiji. The cable and switch is good because other receivers work fine on this LNB Dishpro Quad setup. The receiver will power on and off several times before finally turning on without signal. When a check switch is done it goes to 38 with nothing found. There is an 820uf Capacitor that is blown not to far from where the dish cable enters.Could this be the problem?
Update,Changed the Capacitor and now gets signal.

If anyone has a solution - please help
I was told by a Bell chat-person that if I cancelled and still had my receiver I would still be able to watch my recorded shows. Well it was working, I was able to watch recorded shows on the hooked up external hard drive and watch very limited free satellite programming - like the fireplace channel or Game TV - I was able to record these shows as well. It was all still hooked up to the satellite. Then all something happened, someone moved the wires on the hard drive and the receiver restarted and it started an update. oh no! but I didn't stop it, and I let it update and then the PVR wouldn't play any shows.

Does anyone know what happened, why did all of a sudden can't I watch those recorded shows. Do I need to re-activate the receiver or something? The TV account is now cancelled so it's a non active account. I'm guessing it tried to update to a non active account and said no no no and maybe stopped allowing it to work. Mind you I can still receive channels just can't play from the PVR now.

Is there anything I can do?

Now before this all happened I did buy a second receiver. I hooked it up and phew! I can watch shows on there (I was only going to use it a secondary PVR box. I don't dare connect it to the satellite coax. I even tried the smart card from the second receiver into the first and it wouldn't allow it (smart card not matched to the receiver or something error).

Any ideas on how I can get the first receiver working again? Looks like I may need to activate another TV account with the 1st receiver and be sure to disconnect it from the satellite before cancelling. Please help

I had a power surge the other day and when power came back my 6400 could not get a signal. Powers up no problem . I am wondering if these caps C64 and C141 capacitors might have blown but for some reason I can not locate them on the mother board . Would anyone have a pic that they can show me the location for me to check . I have other receivers working on the same dish at this time with no problems Thanks

You may have a different revision of the motherboard. There used to be a bunch of pics, but it looks like the owner of dropbox account either deleted the pics or his whole account. In the meantime, these posts may help.
I took the cover off of one of my 6400's and sure enough, a bulging capacitor. Here's a couple of pics I took;

Don't get too comfy...you'll be taking the cover off again soon. I noticed on my 3rd receiver, not only was C141 bulging (it was oozing orange goop out of the top) but C64 was bulging as well, so I replaced it too. It's located near the back, closer to the coax input. It's also an 820 uF, 6.3 volt cap. I've been replacing them with 1000 uF, 16 volt caps. as well. All three are working flawlessly now.

Thanks Dr Dave .
Yes def a dif mother board .
From what I have been reading the ones that were in the other posts were saying they were 680uf 6.3 v . I can only find one of those at C98.Looks ok but as I read that does not mean it is ! I do see another 680uf 16v at c460 also looks ok .Guess I will pull them and see

Hello,
New here looking for advice. I have two 9500, one 7500 and one 6400. my cabin has the same dish and LNB as my house. I was thinking of bringing the 6400 to my cabin as we don't use it much at the house. My question is can the 6400 function on its own or does it have to work in combination with the 9500?

thanks.

Hi all.

Turns out my dish (Skewed) currently has a legacy LNB(91) with an empty spot on the arm for another LNB(82). Can anyone confirm if I add another legacy LNB to the 82 spot and use a sw21 to combine the sat signals then run a coax cable to connect directly with a 6400 (only receiver in the house) will this work? In other words will a 6400 work with legacy LNBs and sw21 switch?

Thanks

for the cost of adding a second LNB (82) and SW21, you might be better off removing the legacy LNB and replace it with a DPP Dish pro plus Twin LNB which has both 82 and 91 built in, and has a 2 port switch built in, you can then connect your existing coax line right up to your 6400

I used to be an installer years ago when they rolled out the 82 upgrades and I hung on to a few spare sw21s, 44s and legacy LNBs, so waste not want not. I'll certainly be going the route you suggest if there are any troubles. thanks though.

One last inquiry (I hope) here is the scenario:

My house has one 9500 with a skewed dish and quad LNB and I want to install another 9500, a 7500 and a 6400. My understanding is one of the 9500s will relay to the 7500 (joey) with a hopper adapter and I sort of understand how the tuners will work in that situation. but what about the 6400? can I use the other 9500 and connect to in the same fashion? treat it like a joey and use a hopper adapter? or do I need to run a line directly from LNB ?

Thanks

The 6400 has 2 receivers. I use one for the TV room and cable the other to my office, workshop and kitchen. This gives us a him and hers choice.

We just went through a major storm and power outage for a few days. now that the power is back on, everything works except the 6400. So far as I understand, there is no modern replacement for the 6400. This one failed once before and the local electronics guy was able to repair it. All it needed was a condenser.

He has retired. Is there a electronics guy in the Toronto GTA that could repair my 6400? It won't power on. Does it have a fuse or circuit breaker?

I revived a 6400 that I had in moth balls because my 9242 was acting up and an waiting for caps. I don't think it has been used in probably 8-10 years. I replaced the 2 caps in the 6400 that were causing us issues way back then. My problem is that I've flashed the reciever from Bell.ca and we're still missing large groups of channels from the all channels guide. Time shifting is gone but we have 199. The 70,80,90,00 movie channels are gone by have HBO and Crave channels. With it being off the network for so long I'm concerned that the firmware version is so out of date that I can't update it.

Can anyone tell me the current firmware version of the original 6400, not the new one? This way I know if it's got the current firmware version.

Also has anyone else had this problem with a receiver you reactivated? How did you get it fixed so that it would work properly? Call to Bell? If so, what did you tell them to do to get the programming back?

I can check when I get home later today but missing channels can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to come in depending on when the receiver updates.

Update to my earlier post - Long story short. As long as I don't connect the receiver to the satellite I can still watch all the shows I recorded. Sometimes the Receiver reports an error and I have to wait a while (I thought I was done - I think it was an integrity check - but it was still good after it finished). I have four 2 Terra byte hard drives packed full of recorded shows most of which I still have yet to watch and/or record onto my computer (see below how I do it)

That one receiver I had connected when I cancelled is still sitting here unable to work with any of my PVR's. Now if re-activate my account (actually don't think that's possible) maybe it'll work. But does anyone know if I use that receiver to start a new subscription if it will allow my PVR's to play?

The only way I can get my shows / movies off the PVR is to run the HDMI through a splitter to my colossus 2 card in my computer and record the shows real time - sure it's primitive but it's the only way to get the shows on your computer. It's not exact but pretty close.
