I have a yamaha rxv1800 and am having trouble, I get a bad buzz through the speakers, yes all connections are good and the turntable is properly grounded to the amp, I have even purchased a pre amp and hooked it up only to make the sound worse and very distorted. Any help would be greatly appreciated I have a feeling it has something to do with the stylus output. The kicker is, all works and sounds fantastic when hooked up to my old pioneer amp.

If you still have the pre-amp, this is for connecting the phono to a non-phono input like say CD or any of the other high level inputs. The phono input is "special" and requires a low level input - straight phono without the pre-amp.

It's possible that with the pre-amp you sent too much signal to the Phono input and damaged it. A hum/buzz is often an indication of a poor/loose connection on phono. Here's a previous thread to look at for other things to check:
