Xbox turns ten today

Jump to Latest

Ten years ago today, November 15, 2011, Microsoft released the Xbox video game console in North America. It was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming console market, and competed with Sony's PlayStation 2, Sega's Dreamcast, and Nintendo's GameCube.

Since then, Microsoft has sold more than 24 million Xbox consoles, which were discontinued in late 2006, and more than 57 million second generation Xbox 360 consoles.

Development of the Xbox began in 1998 and was first mentioned publicly in late 1999 during interviews with then-Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. Gates unveiled the Xbox at the Game Developers Conference in 2000, around the same time the Sony Playstation 2 was released in Japan. The Playstation 2 went on to become the best-selling console of all time, eventually selling over 150 million units, more than six times the number of Xbox consoles.

The Xbox 360 (released November 22, 2005) and Playstation 3 (released November 11, 2006) have sold a similar number of consoles since they went on sale, 57 and 55 million respectively.

If you asked me 10 years ago that by 2020 Microsoft may be largely irrelevant as an O/S company but would be the biggest gaming company in the world I would have said you were crazy.

Now that's looking like the most likely bet -- that is until Apple's plan for global domination becomes fully realized...
