After using Telus satellite for years with a tripod mounted dish we recently bought a newer trailer that came with a trav'ler on the roof, pretty cool to have.
I understand Shaw has changed up their satellites and I'll have to update the trav'ler. Has anyone heard when Shaw will have this update avaialable and how would I update my system?
Thx

The updates are coming. You can either update your current system for the price of a service call from a Sat dealer, or buy the New IDU which is state of the art. It should be good for any future updates as it will connect to an app on your phone to be able to dl from the internet. Your phone will also be able to control the dish up down, etc. I will have them available in limited supply in about 2 weeks at $550.

I've learned Shaw changed satellites back in November, that's 4 months ago, why is this update taking so long? Is Winegard waiting for something from Shaw?

I'm reading that one of the sats is failing, so they're migrating to the other one and anyone who goes south toward Mexico will be outa luck, is that right?

Winegard told me yesterday my IDU is NOT upgradeable and I'd have to buy a new one which will be $289 (but I guess that's US?) They also told me mine is not a Trav'ler Pro, so mine cannot be updated with my phone? But this new one you have will?

Camping season is just around the corner, would like to have this figured out soon.

Yes F2 is failing, so all the channels have to be migrated to G1, Shaw moved the channel 1st that winegard used to lock in on. who knows why. The channels will be converted to HEVC at some point as well, Then all 600 receivers are Useless and you will need an 800 series going forward. Winegard techs had to work with Shaw on the fix then they had to test it and make sure it worked on the older units. We expected it early Feb, then there was a glitch and we waited again.
And yes, once this is all done there will no longer be a signal down south IE arizona, Mexico etc. If you are in a state that can receive G1 then it will still work with the 800 rec. This was the plan to end it by the end of 2025. The failure of the satellite advanced that dead line. Thank Bell for pushing this..

So the way it works we will take the new IDU hook it to your system and be able to update the software in your GPS unit (in turrent on roof) then when finished put your old IDU back in, or you can opt to buy the new IDU and do this yourself if any future updates are needed and can now also control the dish from your phone.. Cool :)
That is always US by the way. by the time it gets to Canada with shipping etc our cost is a LOT more than that I'm Afraid.

I must be missing something, you need access to my RV to do this? You update the gps unit on my roof and my old IDU will work? Earler you said you have to update the old IDU..?

If I buy the new IDU I can do it myself? Winegard didn't say anything about a new IDU with bluetooth etc.
What is the name of your company? Do you have a link with more info on this?

I'd think with this going on there would be more info on this site, guess not many people have these rooftop things..?

Hi Fisherguy, Yes we need access to the RV, have to be on site. Yes, we update the unit with the New IDU, then remove it and put your old one back in and it will work. At least that is what they tell us :) The Old IDU is just to power on and off, The new one is compatible with your old roof top system and gives you more control over it with updates etc using your smart phone app. Yes if you buy the new IDU you can update it yourself now and in the future if need be.
I was not sure if it's ok to put my company name on here, but search on facebook for simply satellite and you will see the updates I post.

I have NO idea what's been done. A lot of the things I read mention 'old' systems or 'pre 2017' units but this trailer is a 2019 so system is no older than that. How can I tell if the gps part needs changing?

I'm going to call Winegard, the emails I got didn't say anything about a IDU linking to a phone.
I wish this thing had a Bell dish and I could stick with my Telus receiver, this Shaw thing is turning into a major PITA!

Probably not many as the last change cost a pretty penny and for that I believe there was a way for people to stop the dish movement at the right time manually to get it to work. I do not know what your situation is like but I do not voluntarily pay a few thou and then hundreds for updates when my $89 setup works, generally in a few minutes. I set up the trailer, haul out the dish, connect two cables, look at the signal info or if I do not have access to the window due to rv site, my wife checks signal. Generally about 5 minutes spent levelling and aiming and half hour stabilizing and weighting down. Then I usually sit there for a month or two. Its a challenge and an exercise to know the pointing angle and direction and get it right.
My time is generally free or cheap to my projects.

It can be made to work again, just call a Satellite dealer near you that is an authorized Winegard dealer. Don't use an RV place, usually way more expensive..

Like I said we had the Telus (Bell) dish for over 10 years I know the procedurefor setting things up the "old way" but the trailer we got has the Shaw Trav'ler on the roof so I might as well use it even if I have to do this update.

Some people pour lots into their RV's these days on things like automatic sat dishes, lithium batteries, DC fridges etc. Lucky for me the previous owner of this trailer was one of those people... ;)

We live near Williams Lake BC, not a big town so will see what I can find out.
It just seems weird to me Winegard told me the update is not available yet and I'd need to buy a new IDU when it is; they didn't say anything about updating my system so I can use the old one.
BTW, if I was to buy this new IDU would that make my Trav'ler 7003 into a Trav'ler Pro?

Not weird at all, Last time I called them I was told they were still working on it, next day they said we could order them.. So go figure.
I can mail one out to you, but there maybe a dealer in Kamloops? Winegard used to have all dealers listed on there site. I haven't checked that for awhile, But I should.. lol

And No, only your electronics would be Pro then. the whole turrent is different now as well, All the motors can be un-bolted and replaced right in the field, no need to send the whole dam thing back to winegard to repair anymore.
