At a press event in New York, Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of a new line of smartphones using an upgraded version of its Windows Mobile operating system.

Coming to North America are four Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones: the HTC Imagio, HTC Pure, HTC Tilt 2 and the Samsung Intrepid.

Microsoft says it expects manufacturing partners to deliver more than 30 new Mobile 6.5 phones to more than 20 countries by the end of 2009.

During the event, Microsoft also launched its "Windows Marketplace for Mobile", an application store with 246 programs for sale and "My Phone", a free service that lets users synchronize contennt between their phone and their computer.

In the United States, customers can now purchase Windows Mobile 6.5 on the HTC Pure from AT&T and the HTC Imagio from Verizon Wireless. The Samsung Intrepid from Sprint will be available on Oct. 11, and the HTC Tilt 2 from AT&T will be available in the coming weeks.

No word yet on when any or all of these devices will be available in Canada.
