Hello, we are looking to give my parents a new TV for Xmas. They have basic cable and I am affraid that any of the new TV providing either 720p or 1080p will not look good on regular cable.

I am looking at a 40inch at approx $600-$700 price range LCD (not plasma) because it will be place between 2 windows. It has to be simple to use and will be used to watch only cable TV.

Their current 26in tube TV is old and have colors that are fading...

My father loves watching hockey and I know from my experience that I was disappointed when I got my 46in TV and watched hockey on RDS and TSN on shawdirect which I think his a lot better than the regional cable that my father has. Obviously, when I went to HD after, there was no turning back...

Any advice? Will I get a better looking picture with a 720p only TV on regular cable?

Thanks

I was able to pull in 7 HD channels with an antenna but my signals would drop in and out. So I tried the expanded basic cable plugged into the TV and when I scanned I found my local channels was digital HD provided as part of my Basic package, all said it gave the same 7 HD channels plus my other SD channels.
My old TV would not do this because it would only do Analog or Digital tuner.
My New tv uses both digital and analog tuners at the same time. Since those channels are the once I watch most it has delayed me upgrading to HD signal from Dish or cable

Those channels are 1080i except one 720P. The SD channels look OK and the TV switches automaticaly between 16:9 and 4:3 depending on the channel.

The TV is an LG 47LD520 available for $700-$800 (LCD) I got mine for $699.99 online with free shipping. They have a 42" and 47" inch model.

@ Ray M ... Would you care to mention where you got the LG 47LD520 for 699.00 ? Because I was going to either get that one or the Sony . I ended up getting the Sony but I'm always interested with places giving good deals . The best price I could find for the LG 47LD520 was 799.00 , though the LG 47LD500 was just on sale for 699.00, Thanks
