In a story that hasn't changed since it was released, Google's Chrome web browser continued to gain market share on the desktop at the expense of Internet Explorer and Firefox in September 2011 according to recent figures published by NetMarketshare.

Total worldwide browser usage in September 2011 for Chrome was 16.2%, up over half a percentage point from August and almost double the 8.24% recorded in the same month of 2010.

Internet Explorer remained the browser of choice on the desktop with a 54.39% share, down significantly from 61.45% in September 2010. Firefox was the second most popular browser in September with a 22.48% share, down just sligthly from 23.69% in the same month a year earlier.

Mobile / Tablet Browser Share

The top browser among Mobile and Tablet users in September was Apple's Safari with a 55.59% market share followed by Opera Mini and the Android Browser.
