In order to have a flat gain, we need bow-ties that, have a Ultra Wide Bandwidth.

Here is a whisker version.



Looks complicated to build.

Probably metal sheet metal version would be easier.

Due to my lack ability to draw this metal version. Am giving you a link to go to

Have created a nec version of 4 bay bow-ties using whiskers, not metal.

This version creates a half way decent gain cure.

Not a flat gain cure like the re-scaled Centipede-4 does, but a lot better then the regular 4 whiskers bow-ties.

The Centipede-4 antenna is very good, but it is huge.

Multiband 4 bay bow-tie gain curve.

Let's use Ultra Wide-band bow-ties for our 4 bay bow-tie antennas.

Are you using AutoSeg and if so, how many segments per wavelength? If your not using AutoSeg, why are wire 52, 53, 60, and 61 set to 1 segment? This is causing these wires to have segments, that are much longer than other wires, and is causing errors in your model. It's also causing your results to be look better than they really are. Your not really going to know if one design is better than another, until you get your models as correct as possible. You either need to use AutoSeg, or be more careful to get all of the segments adjusted, so that each segment is as close to the same length as possible.

You might also want to look at UHF Bowties - NO Reflector to see a couple of ways to model solid bowties and multi-whisker bowties, that create less errors and better results.

It's great that your experimenting with different antenna designs. Just keep in mind that chasing that last 1/2db gain is difficult. Errors in modeling can easily cause a one decibel or more error in your results, making it difficult to know if your have actually found something new.

With all the small angles in this antenna, I am using 33 in autoseg.

Gives me a better AGT number.

Because the target spectrum is getting narrower, eg 470 to 600 MHz now, your topic statement "we need better / wider bandwidth bowties" is not true. Antenna designs should be getting easier as well as allowing more choice in antenna types. Another area to focus on might be to optimize the 470-600 MHz band, while killing 600-900 MHz as much as possible at the same time, since none of that spectrum is carrying TV signals anymore.

According to 4nec, this ultra wide band bow-tie looks like it improves swr, and flattens
the impedance curve.

On normal antennas the frequency impedance goes all over the place.

Often from 1000 to 100 ohms.

On this 4nec design, looks like the impedance curve is more flat, closer to 300 ohms.

Finally figured out, how to create a sheet metal version of this.

Think I'll keep working on the 4nec version, till I am satisfied with how flat the gain curve is, then create
the sheet metal version.

Just can't believe how small the flare angles are in the bow ties.

Just using the bow separation sizes, that the optimizer evolve came up with.

These flare angles seems to be too small, but seems to work okay in 4nec.

Go figure.

Think of ultra wideband bow-ties as a way to have your cake and eat it too.

The 4 whisker uhf bow tie design is is a comprise to get the best average gain, swr, and
impedance for the bow tie over the ufh frequency band.

By using extra whiskers, we don't have to comprise.

By using different bow lengths and bow separations, we can get a flat: gain, swr, and impedance.

We can even design to get decent vhf, on a uhf antenna.

This solves most of our design problems with a 4 bay bow-tie antenna.

Tired the extra bow lengths, and it does not work.

Also tried the vhf, no luck so far.

At least it makes an excellent uhf antenna.

Finally figured out, how to make the Ultra wideband sheet metal version.

Ultra wideband bow-ties have very low swr, and the impedance is more close to
300 ohms.

You take the bowlen, and make a circle using the bowlen as the radius.

Take the widest bowsep width, using a ruler, mark the ends, where it meets the circle line.

At each end, draw a line to the middle of the circle.

You will get a simple bow-tie with a curve at the wide end.

You will need multi-threaded version of 4Nec2. NEC2MP.ZIP

You will have to be patient.

It takes at least 15 minutes to a half hour to get a frequency sweep done.

Am enclosing a curved vesion of holl_ands Solid Triangle Bowtie Nec Code.

Uses auto-segmentation of 63.

You will need to resolve the long list of warnings, before your results are accurate. There are situations where you have to ignore warning, but always know that your results may be inaccurate. The good news is that your basic design actually has more gain, than your model shows. My testing indicates that your SWR and impedance numbers are being skewed by the errors in the model. The SWR and impedance match are better for a solid bowtie, than for 2 whiskers, but there isn't as much difference as your showing. Here's a model, of your antenna, that has few, if any warnings. You should be able to run it with AutoSeg from 15 segments to around 45 segments. You can also run it with manual segmenting. You should get very few warnings, and basically the same results, no matter how you segment it. You will have to adjust the source radius, depending on your segment method. You will also notice, with this model, that the source radius for 470mhz, 540mhz, and 608mhz is almost the same. This indicates that the model is giving pretty accurate results, across the entire UHF Repack band.

Model also allows you to adjust bowtie length and depth, and see how it affects the results. I also modeled a solid bowtie, with a flat end, and the results are very similar.

One of the reasons that solid bowties aren't used as much, is that they catch a lot of wind. Not a problem for an indoor antenna, but can be a problem, for an outdoor antenna.

Just ran your version at auto-segmentation 63, with no warnings.

Ran it at auto-segmentation 105 with plenty of warnings.

The AGT on both was close to .99 or .98

The swr, gain, and impedance was looked the same to me.

I think you 4nec model has too low resolution to show the proper swr, and impedance.

Think it's hard to get a solid sheet bow-tie to work properly in 4nec2, without a high resolution
model.

There has been has been research on this type of bow-tie showing, that it definitely improves
bandwidth, and impedance.

Next, want to try a bow-tie with rounded corners.

It's really supposed to improve the bandwidth & impedance curve.

Looking at holl_ands nec model of the solid metal triangular bow-tie, can see that it uses very
crude resolution.

A better way is needed to represent the way electricity actually flows in the bow-tie.

4nec2 can not properly compute results, for two connected wires segments, if their volumes overlap, for more than 1/3 of their lengths. It's known that you will get more accurate results, if you limit sharp angles, or very thick, short wires, that cause the volumes to overlap. Your model has a lot of wire segments, where the volumes are overlapping for their entire length. This is what is creating the long list of warnings. You will have difficulties getting AGT to =1 and will not get accurate results, until you resolve these problems. Sometimes you can ignore warnings, if the overlap is just barely over the 1/3 threshold, but you can't expect correct results, when you have wires segments that overlap their entire length. 4nec2 wasn't designed to model solid, flat surfaces, so any model, of a solid bowtie will be a compromise. Limiting or eliminating the number of warnings should create a more accurate model.

Fully confident that if there was a better way to model the sheet bowtie in 4nec2, holl_ands would have done so if he felt it was worthy enough. Full disclosure, I have not looked for any such model. Guessing people generally don't build them that way because they will increase wind load without any appreciable performance improvement.

Fully agree, that 4nec2 just isn't good enough for sheet metal.

Think I will try OpenEms.

OpenEms looks like it's able too sheet metal simulations.

Rounded bow-ties looks like the way to go, at least for indoor antennas.

These types of bow-ties is supposed to be even more ultra wide band.

Took your rounded bow tie model and fixed the Rbow radius.
You can improve the SWR and impedance curve by increasing the radius of Rbow, the radius/thickness of the bowtie material, but is it practical. I don't think anyone would build an antenna, that uses 1/8" thick metal plate, for the solid bowties. The combination of wind load and weight would make the antenna impractical. Is there a reason that you feel that this larger radius better simulates/models bowties made of sheetmetal?

It's better because of the equal area rule.

Don't believe the radius represents the thickness of the rounded
sheet metal bow tie.

If you don't like rounded sheet metal bow ties, you can always use multi-whisker
bow ties to get about the same results.

Knowing that rounded sheet metal bow ties have a lower swr, used the
optimizer to find the proper radius for this.

Also created a freebasic program to find rbow for a bow tie.

For those who don't want to bother with compiling this code, here is the executable.

Including nec code using rbow of .028

Also fixed the feed seperation.

The results in swr & impedence is not very different from the
the optimizer rbow radius.

But doing surface modeling is unpredictable.

So the optimizer probably got the best rbow radius.

How did you developed your version of the rounded bow tie antenna?

Looks like you used some software to developed the wire grid.
