Wanting to setup a CIS330

Sorry if this has been asked before but I keep seeing different answers. Maybe one of the Telus techs know.

I've had Optik TV for over a year now. I wish to purchase an additional CIS330 for my bedroom from Future Shop or Best Buy. Can I set it up on my own or do I need a tech to show up? Also, does the CIS330 connect to the CIS430 or does it connect to the modem?

I added a CIS330 to my setup when I bought a new one from Best Buy. Basically, you need a reg (registration) code. You will need a CAT5e connection to the modem, or you can use the COAX (HPNA) connection from the modem to your new STB (coax - video in). After it's connected, you should successfully get to a reg code screen. That's when you call TELUS. If the CSR asks who ran the line (installed line), say the tech installed the line when you originally had your service installed - this will save you an install fee, as the CSR might want to roll a truck just for that.

If you're unsuccessful getting a reg code, hang up, call back, get a different CSR until you do.

Use Cat5e if you do your own wiring. Coax cable is more susceptible to problems if it's not done properly.

All coax connectors must be the compression type, not crimped type. All the connections have to be finger tightened, then tightened 1/8th of a turn with a 7/16ths wrench. This includes connections to the jacks as well as the ones behind the jacks and at any splitter or barrel connector. If you use a splitter, it should be an HPNA splitter (I don't think you can buy these through retail outlets.)

I ran into a similar problem when i bought my second tv. I went out and bought the second box at FS, then came home, plugged it in, and everything ran smoothly (i had this house built, and put in a distributed media box in the basement, and know where everything goes).

when i powered up the box, sure enough, within a few minutes, it was asking for my reg code. i called telus at this point, asking for the code. the kid said no problem, he'd get one for me, and then came back a couple mins later to say that it had to be professionally installed, and they would have to send out a tech.

i called back, and said a friend of mine was a telus tech and had come over on his day off and plugged everything in for me, and all i needed was the code. 2 minutes later, my tv was working fine.

i understand the system runs a bit differently than your average cable install, but still, the $100 installation charge per additional box comes across as a total cash grab to me.

You'd think they would make it easy for you to add additional boxes. It doesn't seem to make sense why I would have to pay $100 for a tech to do something I could do myself. It doesn't seem like rocket science to hook up an additional box. I guess I'll purchase it, hook it up myself and give the "my friend is a Telus tech and already set it up for me" excuse to get the code.

I spoke with a rep during the order process for my (recent -- Feb 2013) install and asked about adding additional boxes later. She said that although they need to send out a tech to do the install of any additional boxes, if you've bought the box from a retail partner (Future Shop, Best Buy, London Drugs) the service call fee is waived. I believe it's only if you order a box from Telus and have the tech supply it that the fee is applied. I'm not sure if this is a recent change or if it's an ongoing or only temporary policy, so you should confirm the fee is being waived when you call in, though :)

Go buy the box, install it, and make sure it's working. Simply connect to your modem via CAT5e or the available COAX line out of the modem. You can run this yourself, so long as you terminate correctly, or you can buy a pre-made cable. After you're connected, make sure your box initializes and it takes you to a Registration Code screen. That's where you call 310-MYTV. Explain that you're adding a box to an existing line that the installer previously put in for you during your initial install. If the CSR won't do it, hang up and call back.

If you're unsuccessful, call back and tell them you're cancelling because you're being fleeced a $100 for something that the TELUS installer already did. All you need is a Registration Code that the CSR can easily generate. Don't worry about what notes TELUS may or may not have on file about your installation, as we all know, half the work is done by contractors, and they're the worst for documenting notes.
