Hi guys,

I've been scouring the forums, but haven't found a clear answer on this yet. Is there a capture card / external capture card that anyone knows of that will allow me to watch HD on my computer.

I can find a firewire port on this device and from what I've read it sounds like all I need is a catpure card not a tv tuner ? If anyone has done this or knows if it possible to input from the satellite receiver to the computer that would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting lost in all the acronyms to be honest. Such as STB for example.

The motorola HDPVR is its on pvr so not sure if I'd want the one from Haupage. I really just want to view video on my pc, don't care about recording it as the box can record already.

Should i post in another forum about a good HD TV capture card ?

STB = Set Top Box - your PVR. Here's the acronyms FAQ - you may want to check out my second link in the previous post:

There are no capture cards that accept HD signals from a STB, which require component video or HDMI connections. If you're satisfied with SD, then an S-video or composite video connection to the computer would work. Or, if the computer monitor has parallel connections, you could connect the STB to the monitor instead of the computer.

The capture cards on the web are designed to be used with OTA signals.

If you just want to watch the recordings, not to save them, just connect the 630 HDMI to your monitor if it has an HDMI or to DVI (you need an HDMI to DVI adapter cable). You wil also need to get the sound out and connected to external speakers in some way (can even go to the input of your PC sound card for example). You need a monitor which supports HDPC (almost all newer ones do). Of course this is watching on your monitor not on your PC but if you don't want to keep the recording is the same. If you don't care about HD only SD you can use any video card with video input or an USB video graber (there are many), and connect the composite signal from the PVR to the graber input.

No it will not work. For HD you need a grabber wich can get component signals and digitize them. There are not to many that can do this but you can do a search.

there are no firewire ports on the 630 or any of the Shaw Satellite units that I am aware of (only USB) that will not work with anything for the use you described.
