Having already made Fibre Hybrid 120 and Fibre Hybrid 200 Internet access services available to nearly 2.9 million households and businesses, Videotron is pushing the envelope still further by enabling households and businesses in the Greater Montréal area to reach and even exceed 1 Gigabit/s.

Testing of the new service, which supports speeds of 1,000 Mbps or more under certain conditions, began in Montréal-area homes and businesses several months ago.

The service now being tested is supported by DOCSIS 3.0 technology, the use of new modems and optimized network architecture.

DOCSIS 3.1, which should be available in 2016, will allow still faster speeds. This new network upgrade will equip Videotron to effectively meet spiralling daily Internet use by consumers, fuelled by the proliferation of Internet-connected devices and the explosive growth of television streaming services, which are changing home entertainment habits. And much more is just around the corner, including home automation and the Internet of Things.

"Reaching the gigabit per second threshold in this technological test makes the potential of our state-of-the-art network that much more palpable," added Manon Brouillette. "We are planning to introduce the new service commercially and details of the roll-out will be announced at a later date."

Videotron launches Hybrid Fibre Giga Internet service

Videotron announced today that it will begin offering consumers and business customers Internet connection speeds of up to 940 Mbps on July 13, 2016.

The gradual roll-out of Hybrid Fibre Giga Internet will begin in Laval and continue across Videotron's service area in the following months. For $149.95 per month, Hybrid Fibre Giga will give all subscribers, including businesses, unlimited data, allowing them to take advantage of the high-speed service's full potential without worrying about data caps. Hybrid Fibre Giga service will support download speeds of up to 940 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50 Mbps.

Videotron revamps Fibre Hybrid Internet plans to give high-speed users more

Videotron announced today that it is revamping its residential Internet access services in order to streamline the plans and afford customers greater flexibility.

The changes also include free rental of a New Generation Wi-Fi router with a new 30, 120 or 200 Mbps service. In addition, consumers who choose 120 Mbps, 200 Mbps or Giga service get unlimited data. The ultra-high speeds are available as of now on Videotron's hybrid network.

Videotron to start roll-out of next-generation Internet

Videotron has begun implementing Docsis 3.1 on its network, which will eventually deliver lightening speeds of up to 10 Gbps for downloads and 1 Gbps for uploads. Videotron is now deploying Docsis 3.1 modems on its network and adapting its equipment and working protocols to the new technology.

Beta testing is already underway at Montréal-area homes and businesses. The tests will collect important information on users' behaviour and reactions in a real-life environment and help ensure the reliability and performance of the technology once deployed on Videotron's network.

After testing has been successfully completed, it will be possible to roll out Docsis 3.1 very quickly as it is compatible with Videotron's existing network, where it has been upgraded. Only a new modem for the user and a software upgrade on the network will be needed in order to deliver the very high speeds.
