Just as an FYI, there are threads on both of these in the Rogers forums. You may wish to have a look at those threads. There's also a comparison thread between the 8300 and 8642. Not saying that what you see will be identical, however, much of it probably will.
That would be a new low for Videotron (but in a good way).
I am skeptical but perhaps they need to attract or maybe even keep customers from jumping ship with an offer like that. Having people BUY hardware is a good way to "lock" people in now that contracts are a thing of the past.
from a videotron chat session -
Me: Hi - just wondering if its true that you have new HD PVR terminals in?
Videotron: Yes, we have new HD PVRs that now have a 500 GB hard drive.
ME: Whats the make and model?
Videotron: I'll check that, I'll be right back.
Videotron: Scientific Atlanta, Explorer 8642
ME: Thanks - and whats the cost? I currently have HD but not with a PVR, I just have the HD Digital terminal.
Videotron: the regular price is 599$, but there's a promotion for the holidays: 50% off, so it comes to 300$
ME: Cool. When does the promotion start because I don't see any of this on the website?
Videotron: It starts on November 17th, this wednesday.
no - you can see the extent of my questions above.
We shall have to wait until Wednesday to find out the nature of the promotion.
Im just pleased they finally found a new box to sell. I've been waiting for
this for a long time and don't even care to pay full price for it, I just didnt
want the old model they've been selling for the last few years.
T: Hi, can you tell me when the new receivers will be
> available? I hear it is today or tomorrow maybe? Model 8642 and
> Marie-Eve: The new receivers are available since November 3rd.
> T: They are not on the web site and the stores don't have
> Marie-Eve: They have to be ordered over the phone at 1-877-380-2511.
> Marie-Eve: We do not know when they will be available in stores.
They wouldn't say what exactly, but the person at Videotron customer satisfaction told me that they are very exciting things coming soon for the new 8640 HD DVR...New features only with that terminal...
The promo by the way is for any customer who doesn't have an HD terminal.
L'offre est valide seulement si le terminal nouvellement acquis est de valeur supérieure au terminal déjà au dossier et que le client ne possède pas de terminal HD.
My 3250HD blew up last Halloween after 5.5 years of service. I'm renting a 4250HD for a month till I grab one on sale. Given that sentence, I have a 4250HD in my file but don't own one and going with the PVR model would be an upgrade... The english text is ambiguous but the french text clearly means that the terminal has to be owned by the client.
I noted that Videotron sold a new PVR model which is not presented in their web site : the Cisco Explorer 8642HD.
Can someone tell me more about this unit ?
a) is it much better than the regular 8300HD?
Why Videotron is selling it very secretely?
Is that the new unit taht some people has been wwiting for for quite a long time?
