Snapchat has finally announced that it acquired Toronto-based Bitstrips this past March.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bitstrips, maker of Bitmoji, to the Snapchat family,” said a Snapchat spokesperson to the Financial Post.

Bitstrips, which has a Facebook app as well as iPhone and Android applications, is a mobile app that allows users to a create cartoon avatar of themselves and of their friends.


Users can change multiple elements on their characters and place them in over 10,000 different scenarios.

In fall of 2016, Bitstrips partnered with Disney allowing users to place their avatars in a cartoon version of a scene from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

According to several reports, Snapchat acquired the popular app for $100 million.

CTVnews.ca report s that in 2014, Bitstrips had 17 employees and more than 30 million users in 90 countries worldwide.

For its part, Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application created by three former Standford students, Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown.

It allows users to send instant messages that are deleted by Snapchat’s servers once a Snap is viewed by all recipients.
