The company recall came after a September incident in which a customer tv caught on fire. According to a Sony statement releasd today, an additional eleven incidents have been reported in Japan since 2008.
The televisions subject to recall were manufactured in 2007 and 2008 and were mostly sold in Europe and the United States, although some were also sold in Japan and other parts of the world, a Sony spokeswoman said.
In Canada, affected models include: KDL-40V3000, KDL-40VL130, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40WL135, KDL-40XBR4, and KDL-40XBR5. The model number of a Sony television can be found by looking at the label on the rear of the television
Sony says it will offer all customers of the affected models a free evaluation for the covered product. Customers who have a television covered by this notice should visit www.esupport.Sony.com/ca or call Sony toll-free at 1-877-899-7669, to schedule a service technician to perform an evaluation.
If the technician deems a repair is necessary, it will be done at no charge to the consumer.
The company is also warning that if owners of the affected models notice any abnormality in their television unit and its performance (e.g.: unusual noise, unusual smell or smoking), they should turn the unit off immediately, unplug the cord, and contact Sony. The problem can only occur when the power is turned on.
