Here's an interesting one.

Members of our extended family tried to call my Mom last night and the phone was busy for hours. Concerned I drove over to make sure she was okay, she was.

Anyway, we checked her phones and still a problem so we decided to call Bell in the morning.

It turns out that my mom's phone is going to be out of commission for over a day. In addition, every phone number in the 416-251-xxxx range is out of order.

I've never heard of such a thing happening.

Since the phone numbers are randomly distributed over an area, it would make sense that its some type of switching problem or technical glitch as opposed to a "cut" line somewhere.

Anyone had something like this happen to them.

I have family in South Etobicoke with a 416-251-xxxx number on Rogers--and they're fine.

You can sometimes run into an issue calling an NXX if it's a new one, and your carrier hasn't added it to their routing table. However, this obviously isn't the case, as this NXX has been around since at least the early 70's.

Very odd situation indeed.

Nothing suprises me when it comes to Bell. A couple of years ago the 800 numbers were out across the country for the better part of a day or so. I know that because my alarm sytems were unable to call the monitoring station.

If that same NXX on Rogers is fine, then there's probably some sort of hiccup in Bell's DMS100 that handles that NXX. (Guessing)

My parents have had the number since 1954. When I was little my parents still used to say our number began with Clifford-1 (as opposed to 251)

For what its worth, its almost 40 hours later and the number is still not operational. My brother called Bell on behalf of my mom last night and Bell is saying that some cable was cut somewhere and that's the problem

Sure Bell is far from being perfect (but they are real easy to pick on eh!) but if there is one thing they have that is reliable it's their POTS... Situations as described by hugh are rare, I wouldn't be surprised that it's the first major incident they get since 1954.

Uh, while I agree with you that POTS is reliable, I really doubt this qualifies as a major incident, and I really doubt it's the largest problem they have experienced in 56 years.

Travis, I meant "largest problem" since 1954 specific to hugh's Mom's line, not for Bell as a whole... I'm sure they had much bigger issues over the years.
