U.S. E-reader ownership doubles in six months

Jump to Latest

The percent of U.S. adults with an e-book reader doubled from 6% to 12% between November 2010 and May 2011 according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project .

The strong growth in e-Reader ownership was even greater than tablet ownership. In May 2011, 8% of adults report owning a tablet computer such as an iPad, Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom versus 5% in November of 2010.

The study also found a notable overlap in e-reader and tablet computer ownership – 3% of US adults own both devices. Nine percent own an e-book reader but not a tablet, while 5% own a tablet computer but not an e-reader.

The survey of 2,277 adults ages 18 and over also asked respondents what other types of electronic gadgets they owned. Wireless phones topped the list at 83%.
