I am wondering what is typically harder on the hard drive inside of the 5100: turning it off and on with regular use or just letting it run all the time. Seems like there's a lot of wear-and-tear on the drive if it keeps getting turned off and on over time. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Regards,
Dan

I'd say turn it off when you know it's going to be a while before you use it again. i.e./ overnight

Lots of buisnesses have a room full of servers that run 24 X 7 and the rest of the place is work stations that go up and down. You will find there is no real difference in how long the hard drives last. Other than manufacturer. At least that is my finding in the places I have worked.

Having said that. After reading these forums it sounds like the 5100 is just a dog from top to bottom. I sure hope they have fixed these problems in the new box that is coming.

My 5100 is pretty quiet

Quite a few people complained about the whining noise of 5100, but the one that I bought this X'mas is working fine quietly. Just want to let others know. (not all 5100's are noisy)

I love my 5100 and can't go back to watching TV without PVRs anymore.
