TSN, RDS, and Hockey Canada today announced a long-term media rights agreement that extends through the 2033-34 season, continuing their long-standing partnership that dates back to 1991.

The extension ensures that TSN and RDS will continue to hold the exclusive, multi-platform media rights to Hockey Canada events, including the IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, which has become both Canada’s favourite hockey holiday tradition and one of the networks’ most-watched properties. World Juniors games make up three of the top five most-watched programs ever on TSN, and nine of the Top 20.

As the official broadcast partner of Hockey Canada, TSN and RDS will deliver an extensive schedule of games annually from Hockey Canada events, including:

• International events such as the IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP; IIHF WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; and IIHF U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
• Domestic events such as the WORLD JUNIOR A CHALLENGE; NATIONAL WOMEN’S UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP; CANADIAN TIRE PARA HOCKEY CUP; WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE; TELUS CUP; ESSO CUP; CENTENNIAL CUP PRESENTED BY TIM HORTONS; and ALLAN CUP

Alright - Spengler Cup!!! Dance.....

The Spengler Cup is awesome. I'm far more interested in that than the U20 tournament that TSN has managed to turn into something people consider so important.

What I want to know is how much money they are paying. Cameras that prevent penalties don't come cheap!!

I've always seen the Spengler Cup tournament as a bit of a 'quirky' cousin to the more polished and intense World Junior Hockey Championship.

The feel of the Spengler is kind of like, in front of a larger crowd, like a house league tournament between those you'd see in your basement when watching sports.

The World Juniors though....that's where the tension is amped WAY up. Kind of how ESPN, NBC, CBS, and FOX amp up the NFL leading up to the Super Bowl.

Would I be a bit right on some of that, guys?

I think all the 'amping' being done for the World Juniors is artificially created by TSN. Canadian TV fans are really the most interested, and maybe the 'home' country? But The Spengler has been going for 93 years, and most games are sold out. What I like about the Spengler is it's a tourney for older, journeymen players who's careers are either winding down or at a less intense place in their lives - as you say, a house league tourney. But it is supposed to be Europe's better league teams. The KHL may not be invited back next year, as they haven't been sending their best efforts apparently.

I think I'm in the minority of people that enjoys watching the Spengler Cup. The crowds for the European clubs are incredible and put NHL fans to shame with the songs and chants. I wish NHL fans could incorporate elements like that to add to the atmosphere.
