As we discussed when Mike Richards was hired by BCE Inc., The FAN 590 will have some competition in this market when a second all-sports radio station debuts later this month. Personally, I love this move, as the 1050 frequency was wasting away with a simulcast of CP24 and a little sports radio competition can only make things more interesting for us fans.

Essentially, the TSN ~ Sportsnet battle will now extend beyond the television to Toronto radio. Fun!

TSN Radio 1050 – a new all-sports station — hits the airwaves April 13.

CTV Inc., TSN and CHUM Radio are partners in the venture which is debuting in the GTA on AM 1050, nationally online at TSN.ca and on TSN Mobile — on opening night of the Stanley Cup playoffs and the final day of the NBA regular season.

It will feature analysis from TSN’s on-air crew and coverage of live events including Toronto Argonauts games.

The worst kept secret in Toronto is now official. 1050 CHUM will flip from its simulcast of Cable News CP24 to Sports as “TSN Radio 1050” on Wednesday, April 13.

Mike Richards, formerly of Rogers’ “Fan 960″ in Calgary will host mornings. Fox Sports Radio’s Dan Patrick and Premiere Radio Networks Jim Rome will have their shows in the lineup. ESPN announcer Dan Shulman (former PBP voice of Toronto Blue Jays) will be a regular contributor to the station.

The Fan has faced challengers before. A decade ago, The Team hit the Toronto airwaves looking to take a bite out of the sports pie. Within a year and a half, it was a memory.

But a TSN station – located at 1050AM on the dial – is sure to be different. Everybody believes that. If only because its stable of familiar faces and voices will give it a running start and its pockets will be far deeper giving it an ability to absorb some losses if it takes a while to find its footing.

“It’s almost more about being stubborn and sticking to your game plan than your finances, really,” says Chris Gordon, president of CHUM radio which covers TSN’s station and currently runs successful sports radio stations in Vancouver, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Montreal. “This is a project that is measured in decades rather than years.”

That’s because this is about more than just radio. The two stations are merely the tips of a pair of massive icebergs fighting for content and ratings on multiple media platforms.

TSN is part of the huge CTVglobemedia empire. The Fan, meanwhile – which was recently rebranded Sportsnet Radio The Fan 590 to reflect its membership in the bigger corporate family – is part of the gigantic Rogers kingdom.

Filling all their broadcast and wireless communication space requires content. In some cases, that’s the rights to broadcast various sports live. In others, it’s writers and on-air talent feeding sports fans’ seemingly insatiable appetite for opinion, analysis and debate. Being the one medium that allows the fans to directly involved in that content has propelled radio back to a promimence many thought had passed it by.

A well done piece in today's Spec talking about the upcoming CJCL v. CHUM war... no new news though on TSN Radio...

At some point in time, I have to think the powers that be at soon to be launched TSN Radio considered, or at least bemoaned, the fact that their station wouldn’t be ready for NHL’s trade deadline. Somewhere, someone must be laughing at the thought.
I’ve heard a couple of different things on the TSN Radio host side. I am still hearing Melnick is choice numero uno. However if that doesn’t pan out there is apparently a push to go with someone young and relatively inexperienced who will talk sports, sports and sports against McCown. The thinking is that they know they can’t beat him now, so why not try to establish an audience.

Off The Record host Michael Landsberg continues to discuss the possibility of taking on the challenge of cracking McCown’s hegemony in afternoon all-sports radio. But he told Usual Suspects on Thursday nothing has been firmed up.
There have been indications CBC TV personality George Stroumboulopoulos was approached about the TSN position but nothing resulted from the contact.
Landsberg believes that once an afternoon show host is finalized, TSN will get around to filling other slots with local talent. Currently, TSN is scheduling American content (The Jim Rome Show and The Dan Patrick Show) in the middle of the day.
TSN could call on Mitch Melnick, who’s become a local legend at Montreal’s TEAM 990

There’s also recently added Steve Kouleas, who is going to pull double duty, manning the noon-hour show on TSN Radio called That’s Hockey 2 Day in addition to hosting That’s Hockey 2 Nite on TSN2.

Among the names being floated around the rumor mill as potential TSN Radio national hosts is Mitch Melnick, afternoon host at CKGM (Team 990) in Montreal, one of the stations likely to become part of the TSN network; last week, Melnick lost his sidekick, Andie Bennett, who's going across town to become part of the team on CBC Radio 1 (CBME 88.5)'s "Daybreak" morning show.

CHUM Radio president Chris Gordon says he’ll have an announcement next week about the identity of the host(s) charged with taking on FAN 590 fixture Bob McCown. TSN host Michael Landsberg discussed the position, but no decision had been made as of last week.
the company is doing a “soft launch” in April, supplemented by syndicated material such as Dan Patrick and Jim Rome from the United States.

“We’ll start there, but we’re looking at going all local by September,” Gordon said. “We’ll start from our studios on Richmond Street, but we’re looking to move programming up to TSN (in suburban Agincourt). We’re very excited about getting started.”

The “soft launch” is controversial to some in the industry who say you only get one chance at a first impression. Certainly, syndicated material has not worked previously in Toronto.

Did you hear that TSN radio is about to take to the air with the Mike Richards show? That show is about 2 weeks away from taking to the air and I am told the show has yet to hire a producer (you know the talented folks who book guests and actually run the show) or an update anchor. From the outside it seems like things are moving at a snails pace over at TSN.

Multiple lines have been tossed into the Sportsnet Fan 590 employee waters in attempt to lure various types of employees. To date, TSN hasn’t successfully yanked anyone on either side of the microphone. It appears that they have been focusing lately on numerous producers and update people, but to no avail.
who will be hosting the drive home show. I have conflicting reports on this. The one name that I keep hearing is in the mix is…… James Cybulski
While Michael Landsberg’s name keeps getting tossed around the rumour mill, it sounds like Cybulski is the man.

I have heard a couple of different scenarios, the most interesting one had the TSN Radio lineup including a drive home show from 5-7pm. I’ve heard from a few sources that Cybulski will be part of a lead in team to the drive home show (Landsberg?). However, more and more people with knowledge are telling me that it will be Cybulski going mono a mono with PTS.

Cybulski will host the 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Eastern) slot with an assortment of TSN worthies such as Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger and Maggie the Macaque dropping by to bulk up the product. With the FAN 590 ending Prime Time Sports at 6 p.m., it should be interesting to see how TSN exploits that hour. No doubt Cybulski can also use Off The Record material from that day as TSN does its “soft launch” on April 13.

It also now looks as if former Score hand David Bastl will be the update person/foil for The Mike Richards Show when it launches on TSN Radio. Knowing Richards and his edgy humour (his Steve Armitage is a pip), there will be nothing soft about his launch.
