Transcendence (2014) movie in theatres
Johnny Depp
Rebecca Hall
Paul Bettany
Morgan Freeman

Went to see the movie the other day at the movie theatre.
Afternoon matinee.

Just wanted to see a movie - and this was one of the first playing that afternoon that somewhat interested me.

Seemed OK. Interesting concepts and somewhat thought provoking.

Anyone else see it? What do you think?

The quest to develop A.I. artificial intelligent computers or systems.

Concepts of:
AI (artificial intelligence), GOD, Self Awareness (self consciousness).
Can machines or computers - AI systems - have a soul ?

What does it mean to be really alive / self aware ?

Q: "Can you prove you are self-aware?" A: "CAN YOU ?"

Technology and humanity - implications on society.

Fear of technology.

The ENDING of the movie? What does it mean?

A love story mixed in with a Sci-Fi technological thriller?

Reminded me of a Romeo and Juliet ending?
[ one sees the other is "gone" and cannot bear to continue, so sacrifices themselves to "join" the one they love. ]

Perhaps even similar to a Wuthering Heights concept/ending?
[ Cathy joins Heathcliffe, willingly, in the end, in the spirit world ]

She thinks or realizes he's really dead, but in an act of sacrifice, to save everyone else, she sacrifices herself to join him ? Maybe? In another dimension or world?

And the ending shown in their garden, back at their home?
Are they truly dead? Or do they live on, together, in cyberspace / nanospace? Forever?

See it? What do you think? What do you think of the ending?

I appreciate your opinions, everyone ... but I think the movie was a little bit deeper than most of what comes out of Hollywood these days.

Give it a chance.

I think the movie may be looked on a little more favourably in the future.
[ Like how some so called "classic" movies are flops - originally around release time - but say 10 years later, become "Classics" ]
[ I'm not predicting "Classic" status in the future ... but may be looked on much more favourably. ]

I got bored during the battle scenes - we see too much of that sort of military action these days. Gunfights and explosions and artillery, seemed somehow out of place in this movie to me. I just more or less ignored those parts of the movie.

Listen closely to some of the subjects being discussed during the movie. Yes - deep at times. Existential.

Deep and existential subjects being presented and discussed.

Perhaps not of interest to many ... I understand. Or maybe not so "entertaining" in the normal way.

But I found very intellectual, and interesting.

I looked on the IMDB website. The internet movie database. A great resource/reference. Echos many of my thoughts and yours too.

Read a bunch of movie reviews by viewers on this movie, Transcendence.

And also they have a FORUM section where specific topics / threads on individual movies are opened up and discussed by imdb members.

ya, it's split - either they really liked the movie, or really did not like the movie.

I think I will try to see this movie again soon some time / somehow.
