Here's the FAQ on HDMI Issues and things to check - perhaps plug/unplug the cable a few times to ensure a good electrical connection - something unused and 6 years old may require a bit of cleaning, prompting. If this doesn't work, then I would also guess a firmware/HDCP problem in this very early HDMI TV, although HDMI usually works, unlike DVI. If it were an HDCP issue, you'd probably get a message on-screen, rather than "dead air".
If you have another (shorter) cable, give it a try. The fact the cable works on one TV is not a guarantee that it'll work on this one, as a stronger signal may be required...
