TomTom announced today that the latest version of the TomTom app for iPhone and iPod touch (version 1.2) is now available from the iTunes app store.

The updated application adds text-to-speech (TTS) for spoken street names, advanced lane guidance, a new Help menu providing direct access to emergency numbers and directions to the nearest emergency providers, and the ability to control iPod music from within the app.

The latest Tele Atlas maps are also included.

"Our latest update adds the most highly anticipated advanced features to the TomTom app. These major enhancements and new features will be a great complement to its easy-to-use and intuitive interface, turn-by-turn spoken navigation and unique routing technology,” said Benoit Simeray, TomTom’s senior vice president, on-board mobile.

Despite the promise of new features, early feedback on V1.2 from iTunes Canada app customers has been decidedly negative with several users complaining the app does not load, won't launch or results in the iPhone 3G crashing every time the app runs.

Among the first eleven V1.2 reviews, two were positive while nine were negative.
