TextNow is a company that offers affordable mobile phone service through unique cloud based technology.

It allows users to make calls and text for free using a hybrid of Wi-Fi + cellular.

Through TextNow Wireless and the free TextNow app , the company provides millions of users with an affordable alternative to traditional wireless plans.

TextNow currently is said to operate under 85 employees and announced last Thursday that it has taken on Lindsay Gibson, formerly VP of Manufacturing & Supply Chain at BlackBerry, as Chief Operating Officer.

Through a press release, TextNow stated as COO Gibson will assume leadership for all TextNow operations including oversight of the entire customer experience lifecycle encompassing customer care, fulfillment, billing and IT.

She will also be responsible for business strategy and execution and continue to build upon the company's recent impressive growth.

"With TextNow's recent growth trajectory and corporate expansion, we need to continue to build a very strong team to support every aspect of our business," said Derek Ting, CEO and co-founder of TextNow.

"Lindsay's stellar accomplishments at BlackBerry make her the perfect candidate to help us focus on both the TextNow customer experience and corporate growth as we continue to expand."

Gibson is happy with the move. "Having spent my entire career working for a global corporate company, I'm attracted to beginning this new path working for an entrepreneurial venture like TextNow whose primary goal is to provide the most affordable and user friendly wireless service to its users," said Gibson.

"I look forward to bringing my expertise to a team that continues to make their customers their number one priority while leveraging the massive growth opportunities that lie ahead."

Gibson spent 16 years with BlackBerry and most recently, was vice president of manufacturing and supply chain where she supervised both internal and external operations and managed over 35 outsourced repair factories, 600 walk-in service centers and a global staff of 200.

Gibson also directed the company's ShopBlackBerry.com e-commerce channel in 2015, where reports say she grew online sales by 275% year-over-year and oversaw the production and launch of BlackBerry's most recent suite of smartphones, including PRIV, the company's first device to operate on the Android platform.

The news comes following the company's recent expansion to the U.S ., including a new office in San Francisco as well as several key hires.

TextNow was recently selected as one of Canada's Top Small & Medium Employers for 2016.
