I think there were 2 different problems. The original problems were probably caused by severe thunderstorms in Toronto that affected satellite-fed channels (as posted by an employee in the Shaw forum).

The problems later on Aug 9 were caused by the power outage in Edmonton.

Thanks for the info about the thunderstorm + satellite feed problem Dr. Dave. I had not heard about it but that would seem to explain it. It's been fine since it all came back up.

I thought the servers were Edmonton. That makes sense with this type of outage. It's really unusual for a Telus building to get knocked out. They have double redundancy for power and really good lightning suppression.
