Hi, I have been a Telus pre-paid cellphone user for two years now.

I have been getting a call from a 1 800 number claiming I can get a free cellphone if I sign up for a post paid account. The first time, I told him I didn't trust to give my sin #, but then he called again. This time, I gave the telemarketer my sin # & he told me I qualify for a free iPhone & if I sign up for a post paid account. He told me I would have to give Telus $400 upfront or if my account goes over $200, Telus would shut my cellphone off. I opted for the second option.

The telemarketer told me to wait for 3-5 business days to receive my free cellphone. It hasn't showed up & it has been a week! I think I have been had! I don't feel good about it neither!

What should I do? Should I contact the police?

I'm not really worried about my sin # since I do have bad credit to start with.

You should never give out your SIN, except for things related to income tax, EI, CPP etc. It's not just your credit rating. They could use your SIN to help establish fake ID. A bank, for example, may ask for it, because they have to report your investment income, but beyond that sort of thing, there's absolutely no reason a business needs your SIN. Here's some info.

Nothing in life is free. You should never purchase or contract with telemarketers or door to door sales people, or spam. Never. If people stopped dealing with these three sets of scammers, the scams and interruptions to our lives would stop.

There's always a catch and you should shop/research starting from your end, never from their end.

As mentioned in earlier posts, never give out your SIN, unless it's to the institutions mentioned in the link in post 2. The only other people who would request a SIN are scammers or identity thieves.

You may wish to contact your credit card companies, banks, etc and seek their advice - they may give you a different CC number, etc. I don't think you need to contact the police, unless you have a firm contact name and/or address and/or phone number that leads to the scammer.

Do what x katt x said, call telus.

Do you have the phone number, contact info and contact name of the company that called you? Have you contacted them?
