Had a quick look at TV shows on Prime Video:
  • Yellowstone
  • The Expanse
  • Wheel of Time
  • The Great
  • The Boys
  • Bosch
  • Hanna
  • Fleabag
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

This is a fraction of what is available for free* if you have a Prime membership.

*Yes I know it's not really free as a portion of your membership fee is allocated to the Prime Video division.

What did people expect? I KNEW this was going to happen. It was only a matter of time.
[snip old man yells at cloud rant]
CBC's Gem streaming service has "live news, journalism, footage from the local community". You have access to even more of this kind of programming if you're so inclined as local newscasts from across the country are available. We've also gained access to vastly more diverse and interesting TV shows (unless you're really hoping for NCIS: North Dakota or Dick Wolf Presents Law and Order: Traffic Court Division). And please don't limit my choices because you or your acquaintances lack self-control unless you're also against selling alcohol because some people unhealthily binge drink. No one is forcing anyone to subscribe to streaming services, same as no one was forced to subscribe to HBO or FirstChoice back in the day. The traditional conventional networks are still there, pumping out the same kind of content as they always did.

Okay, but the topic is about streaming.17671 is claiming somehow we've "lost" access to "live news, journalism, footage from the local community" because of streaming.

What is your problem exactly with streaming? Why do you hate it?
If you look at other discussions, you'll see that 17691 has a similarly dismissive attitude towards anything that doesn't fit his particular lifestyle. Games are stupid, music streaming is a waste, etc.

I expect Netflix is looking very closely at their churn numbers with each increase to try to maximize profit from that end of the business. It's going to be interesting if a bunch of content creators get together in the future and accuse them of skimping on production costs.

Key paragraph:

While the price hikes sting for consumers, it’s safe to expect they’ll continue — especially for Netflix. Growth opportunities have stalled, and the company’s spending on content continues to grow. To keep up, Netflix has to either increase the number of subscribers paying for its service or ask its existing customers for more money. And right now, Netflix knows it can.

Looks like asking for more money is a go: Netflix Will Prompt Subscribers to Pay for Users Outside Their Households in New Test to Address Unauthorized Password Sharing (EXCLUSIVE)

Netflix will soon launch a test letting primary account holders pay an additional fee for users outside their households — a new attempt by the company to address illicit password-sharing.
...
With the “add an extra member” feature, members with Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans will be able to add subsidiary accounts for up to two people they don’t live with, each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password — for less than the cost of a separate Netflix plan.

In the test countries, the cost for adding a sub-member is 2380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru.

No commercials, no need to fit episodes into 22/42 minutes, shows that don't have to censor themselves, shows that don't have to appeal to to the widest possible audience, shows in foreign languages... But streaming isn't any better...

Are we not talking about pricing?

Streaming prices are going up as everyone predicted but so is cable.
Standard 17671 technique. Posts off or loosely related (e.g., why advertising is important for local business) topic content (which no one minds), someone questions or disagrees with the actual content, and then it's "let's stick to the topic".

The latest Plex newsletter had a link to this Accenture report. Lots of interesting stats.

Of course, planning and actually doing are two very different things [thinks about running shoes sitting in the back of the closet].
