Well, I'd hoped to come here and find a common solution with a search, but no.
We have an HD motorola box with MTS. On some HD channels, it seems when the signal switches from stereo to/from 5.1 there is a loud pop from all 6 speakers. Everything is connected correctly and works fine, just on a few HD channels this loud annoying pop occurs pretty much every commercial break at least once when the signals switch.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Edit: and a bit more info since it is lacking. I am using an older jvc receiver with no hdmi connections. The stb is hooked up to the tv with hdmi and to the receiver with optical.

Not something I have experienced myself with MTS. It may be your reciever.

Sorry to say it but I also have not encountered this which may suggest your receiver is the issue.

Mine is connected up using HDMI.

Dammit!! Ok, thanks guys. I mean, I kind of assumed, but thought I'd take a chance on it being an mts thing.
Now I can buy something new and the wife won't be mad.

This might be moot, but I thought I'd add my $0.02 (CND).

Have you tried the TOSLINK (fibre) output from the TV or Set-top box to the amp? If your amp is not equipped with TOSLINK, then yeah, let the wife know that it'll cost to replace the amp. If it helps to sell her on the idea, let her know that each pop could kill the speakers. And it's either replace the speakers with the amp or just the amp. (I have many ways of getting the wife onboard)

Sorry, just noticed that you ARE using TOSLINK. OK, time for a new amp (happy shopping!)

These sorts of pops when switching from DD5.1 to DD2.0, etc have been reported on some HTiBs and some AVRs. It's likely an issue with the AVR. Does the AVR have a coaxial audio connection? In the meantime you could use analogue audio and that may avoid the pops, but also preclude DD5.1.

The STB supports audio over HDMI, optical and analog RCA connectors. No coax audio connector unfortunately.

You can probably get around the popping problem by changing the menu on the STB Settings > Audio > Digital Audio Output > Stereo.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Finally realized it'd be smart to check the downstairs system on the same channels and see if there's any pops while the wife listens the the same channel upstairs. Loud pop upstairs, nothing down.

So off to Visions I went. Since it's the upstairs system it doesn't need to be ubber powerful. Went with the Pioneer vsx-820-k. Sounds better than the 15 year old jvc it was replacing and no pops. Crazy good specs for the price. Just hope the quality is still decent.
