I have a bell 6131 and hd tv and a sound surround system but the sound surround does not work except when playing discs. Is there a way to get sound surround from hd tv channels, even if they are 5.1?

Here's the FAQ on DD5.1 audio.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17870

On many HTiB/AVRs the default may be "stereo" so you may have to engage the appropriate surround mode for any DD2.0 programming. For DD5.1 signals, most AVRs and HTiB systems provide surround sound automatically, however, the programme must be DD5.1, the setting in the STB must be appropriate and you must have the appropriate digital connection as outlined in the above FAQ.

As requested above, what's the make/model of the AVR/HTiB surround sound system?

Please then check out the following post, useful for those new to the forum - FAQs, Search Tips, Optimization, etc:

We know you have a 6131, you said that in post 1. We need to know the make/model of your surround sound system (often called receiver), as requested in post 4. It would also be helpful if you told us how the 6131 is connected to the system, as requested in post 3. Here's are FAQs on the acronyms used and connection types.

Suggest you read my previous links in post 4 too since the proper connections and what's available in DD5.1 are outlined there.

Well, we are getting there slowly........

How is the 6131 connected to the TV.? HDMI, Component.?
How is the 6131 connected to the Samsung HTC550.? Optical, Composite Audio.?

EDIT;

Are you sure it is not an HTC5500..?

The 550 has a single optical input. If you're using that then you should be able to get surround sound from DD2.0 programming by invoking Dolby Pro Logic on the HTiB. When this HTiB receives DD5.1 programming, I assume it would provide 5.1 surround sound and indicate such a signal with a light or other display.

If you wish assistance, you really need to provide us with information. Your one line "responses" aren't really very helpful and we're not dentists who like to pull teeth.

I had a better look and the only HDMI from the samsung is an output from the samsung, and the only input is a digital optical audio into the samsung and the only output from the 6131 is a digital optical audio other than the HDMI output and the set of 3 cables.
I assume that if I got digital optical cable from 6131 to the samsung is the only way for the signal to get to the samsung for the sound surround to have a chance of working?
I appreciate the help.

Basically correct. How are you connected currently from the 6131 to the HTiB Samsung for audio cable(s)?

Optical or HDMI cable from the satellite receiver to the surround sound A/V receiver are the only ways to get Dolby Digital 5.1 surround with a 6131. Any other outputs on the 6131 are analog. However, not all channels will provide DD5.1. Most HDTV channels and a few SDTV channels will (mostly SDTV movie channels.) The others are mostly PCM (stereo digital.) A few are DD2.0, aka Pro Logic.
