Last night I watched Inception on Shaw's V.O.D. (HD version) .
I was listening via my 5.1 receiver. The front left and right speakers and the centre speaker were really quiet.I had to crank up the volume a lot to hear the dialogue. However the rear speakers and the sub were really loud and the sub was quite "boomy" . During louder scenes the echo from the read surround speakers was really loud and distracting. After an hour of watching I gave up.Either the dialogue was too quiet,or the surrounds and sub too loud.
I tried listening with the receiver turned off,but the voices were still really muted compared to the background sounds.I watched other movies recorded on the PVR , watch live TV,watched a Blu-ray,and they all sounded perfect.
I checked all the settings , and they were fine.

I'm going to call Shaw later today, and see what they have to say..

I'm going try and watch the movie again a see if the problem repeats itself.

I tried calling, but gave up after waiting for someone to answer.

However , last night I was watching "Sing-off" (wife's choice ) .
During the show, the was NO sound coming from the centre speaker.
During the commercials ,there was sound (dialogue)from the centre speaker.
I change channels and watched other shows , and the sound was normal.

So it appears that some channels are not broadcasting some progammes in 5.1 . I was watching a Detroit channel , but can't remember which one.

Once I get a few days off again,I'll do some more checking.
I'm pretty certain I have everything set up correctly at my end, though.

Biggles, in this case the problem rests with Shaw and not your setup. I would get a hold of Shaw and tell them what happened and ask if you could see the movie again without incurring an extra cost.

Probably improperly encoded DD5.1 during the programme with audio out the LF & RF only and then DD2.0 or properly encoded DD5.1 for the commercial. See the following FAQ, item 1 and other DD5.1 info:
