Sonos, makers of wireless music systems for the home, announced today a new compact Sonos media player called the Play:3.

The Play:3 is a smaller version of the company's previously released S5 Zoneplayer. In addition, the company announced the S5 would now be known as the Play:5.

Available in black or white and weighing in at under six pounds, the Play:3 is about 5 inches high by 11 inches wide and 6 inches deep (smaller than a shoe box) and contains three Class-D digital amplifiers and three speakers - one tweeter and two 3” mid-range.

By comparison, the renamed Play:5 is about in 9 inches high by 14.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep and holds five digital amplifiers and five speakers including two tweeters, two mid-range drivers and one subwoofer.

Sonos says the Play:3 has a "Smart-directional" design which consists of an internal sensor which detects if the speaker is positioned vertically or horizontally and modifies the speaker's output accordingly. When the speaker is vertical, the sound is mono whereas when the speaker is horizontal, the sound is in stereo. The Play:3 can also be paired with a second Play:3 with one acting as a dedicated left stereo channel and the second acting as a right stereo channel.

In order to control the new zoneplayer Sonos has released updated controller applications for Android, iPHone and iPad devices.

The Play:3 will sell for $299 while the renamed Play:5 will sell for $399.
