On its corporate blog yesterday, Skype announced the release of Skype 5.0 for Windows.

New features of the VoIP software include: a new interface which the company says makes the program easier to use; improved call quality, automatic recovery of dropped calls; Facebook integration; offline instant messaging; contact search and improved contact adding.

Facebook integration gives Skype users immediate access to their Facebook phonebook so they can call or text Facebook Friends.

Another notable feature of the new software is a group video calling feature which enables callers in multiple locations to connect. Skype says the group video calling feature is still in beta and requires all users in the group to have Skype 5.0 for Windows installed.

Skyp says video calling accounted for approximately 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes in the first half of 2010 therefore it expects group video calling to be well used.
