What channels do you get with Digital Basic? I am in Thunder Bay, and there are channels called Basic Cable, but there are also the Classic Cable 'Tiers'. Any idea if I would get all 3 Tiers as well as the Basic Cable channels?

I would be interested in doing this too, just getting the DIgital Basic, and adding the HD channels. I have a bunch of channels I never watch. I have 2 digital boxes and one HD PVR (6412III)

Thanks.

On the channel list:
Digital Basic includes Basic Cable, Digital TV and Digital Music.
The Digital TV channels include the Superstations, MSNBC, etc. It definitely does not include the 3 tiers.

Yes to get Family (66) you have to subscribe to tier 3. Also if you have full cable you get Nickeloeon at no charge.

I was also thinking of getting Digital Basic and HD Plus in Vancouver. I noticed on this page (after entering a Vancouver postal code) that it says, "TSN2 is included in Canadian Time Shifting, Sports Specialty Channels or HD Plus." So if I get HD Plus, that means I'll get TSN2 in HD and SD, right? I'll be able to watch TSN2's SD channel on my other non-HD DCT?

TSN 2 SD is part of Digital basic (free for any DCT) as far as I know so yes you should get it. Try tuning it in on your HD now and that will tell you if your SD will get it.

TSN 2 HD is also on a free trial coming up next week.

TSN2 HD didn't work at my friend's house last night, and he has Digital Basic AFAIK. I told him to order HD Sports or HD Plus pkg.

If you check the Shaw website it clearly states the TSN2 is ONLY available in Vancouver with the Canadian time shift package or with the sports specialty channels and not on digital basic. Just thought I would point that out.

I'd like to know the logic behind some of Shaw's decisions in how they package stations for different markets, especially popular networks. Why does Vancouver not get TSN2 as part of digital basic, why does Calgary get HGTV as part of basic cable when most (none?) markets don't? Why HGTV? There are other examples which are as equally as bizarre as far as I'm concerned.

TSN2 is also available with HD Plus in Vancouver. As I said before, if you check this page after entering a Vancouver postal code, it says (the fine print under "Timeshift Package"): "TSN2 is included in Canadian Time Shifting, Sports Specialty Channels or HD Plus."

I was curious if having HD Plus meant that you'll get TSN2 in HD only and it wouldn't include TSN2 SD. A friend just confirmed that you get TSN2 HD and SD with HD Plus (he has HD Plus and doesn't have Canadian Time Shifting or the Sports Specialty package).

Corndogger, even TSN (the original, that is) isn't included with Digital Basic in Vancouver (it's part of Tier 1). Not sure why that is--I'm presuming it's part of Basic in almost every other market.

TSN is definitely part of basic cable in Calgary. I wonder if the CRTC is forcing Shaw to carry other networks in Vancouver as part of basic cable and there simply isn't enough room for TSN? I guess Shaw could expand the number of basic cable channels but that would mean a price increase which some subscribers might not like.

I've been thinking about buying a HDPVR for down stairs HDTV, I noticed many big electronics stores in town now sell these shaw HDbox's. if I buy one of these box's do I have to pay anything extra on top of my existing bill, that is i think digital tv already. I am paying about a 100 dollars a month already for internet and tv. is it better buy this from shaw directly?

I phoned Shaw Edmonton about this recently. Our family was thinking of buying our parents an HD box so they could view the HD channels but they currently only have the Basic Shaw analog channels and we don't want to increase their monthly costs.

They indicated that there was no need to add Tier 1 2 or 3 to get the HD channels. Therefore, no increase in the monthly cost. Can anyone else confirm they have this setup in Edmonton?

I know that when I set up a customer by adding a purchased HD DCT I just put the DCT on the acct and they get the HD Basic channels for free. You would not need to add T123 at all so there would not be an increase in the bill.

If you buy the DCT from a Shaw Retailer (Best Buy, London Drugs, etc) it doesn't matter as the DCT is still warrantied for 3 years by Shaw and occassionally these retails will have a sale that will allow you to purchase it cheaper.

I'm sure there shouldn't be an issue with purchasing the HD box to decrypt the HD channels.

I'm not sure on the specifics, but I believe all the analog channels are still controlled by Shaw at the junction boxes. ShawGuru, if you can confirm this, I believe that the HD Basic channels are always broadcast, as you need an activated DCT to decrypt them anyways.

I picked up a Shaw HD PVR from an old customer of Shaw, and although it wasn't activated on my account yet, I was still able to decrypt all my classic cable channels, as well as the HD ones.

If you are in doubt about the package issues, just call Shaw's billing department (They are pretty knowledgeable, and you don't have to wait long because they're anxious to take your money) and get the questions answered. You can always ask for the operator ID in case there is a billing discrepancy.

Hope this helps!
