The greatest advantage to radio-frequency remotes is their range: They can transmit up to 100 feet from the receiver (the range for Bluetooth is shorter), and radio signals can go through walls. But I disabled mine, because with 3 receivers my 830 will interfere with my others. It's great if you have only one receiver and 2 tvs hooked up to that receiver in a different room, you can change channels on the remote TV.

The remote would be the same model you were given with your 6XX, there weren't any remote updates done for 8XX (though a couple of years ago we did get the TV pairing instructions screened onto the back, that's the only difference).
Thanks for this info. A question you my be able to answer: with Shaw only offering ‘rentals’ with regards to the 800 series replacements, and then on ONLY one unit (many like me have five, owned 600 series devices), will I be able to just say ‘no’ when Shaw wants me to change to a DSR830, and continue using my ‘owned’ units until the final conversion is done? I’m considering just winding down and eventually cutting my satellite ties….not a big fan over renting. Thanks.

I think Shaw has no choice but to allow you to do this, but I'm wondering what service are you going to?

You can purchase a new unit from SD, 830 was 299 plus tax. As well, since I purchased my unit, my 630 will not be de-commissioned after 30 days (if you opt for a free rental that is what happens to the unit you replace). You could also buy used units cheaper (provided it was not a rental, and is clear of any charges) to add to your system.

I assume you can purchase the 800 as well. At the very bottom of https://www.shawdirect.ca/hardwareupgrade
under footnote 6 in the Terms and Conditions about the 8xx series it says "Purchase options are also available." so that is what I said when I called to get my 830. I'm not sure what the price of the 800 is, though I thought the 800 at 99 was a special offer when we had to upgrade our really old receivers the last time they made changes.
