I was surprised Shaw Direct didn't use the pending F2 demise (and the move to all G1 HEVC) to move their technology to multiplex all pending G1 signals so that they could go to a single cable install for all receivers. I guess, while it's technically achievable, that old commercial reality makes it not viable these days. I do think that their costs will drop substantially with only one Bird, making them profitable with less Customers. I wonder if a single LNB / Dish combination is on their horizon to reduce costs further for new installs.

What really bugs me is Shaw Direct haven't put a fork in it and stated when the shift to a single Bird => G1 will occur. As we've got cable issues (see Tough Install ) it would cause our 78 year old neighbor and his wife there less hassle and stress know when this move will occur.

That's a good point that it will be cheaper for Shaw if they only have to pay for one sattelite. I bet they'd like to move everything to G1and do the HEVC change right away* but they don't have enough 800 rcvrs yet to make sure every body can get HEVC.

* Or maybe they'd like to wait a few more months to get one more season of snowbird subscriptions LOL. Maybe F2 will last just long enough for that.

Jim I hope Shaw changes things to make it easier for your friends and their cable run from the dish.

Satellite space is typically leased by the transponder. Any savings will be from HEVC encoding reducing the number of transponders required. Reducing the number of satellites may reduce costs in other ways, such as in receiving equipment.

With the reduction to one satellite, the number of cables needed is already reduced to 2 so probably SD figures that is good enough.

See below for Shaw Broadcasts initial transition schedule for HEVC starting in July. A number of existing G1 signals will be light switched to HEVC. In addition a handful of signals (Mostly Super Ecran, Super Channel and Stingray channels) from F2 will migrate to G1 and convert to HEVC.

Thanks for the link. At least we now know when the beginning of the end of F2 is planned to start. It also marks the end of use for 6xx series receivers as they cannot transcode the HEVC (AKA H.265) codec that will be used on G1.

Let the fun begin!

It looks like their trying to keep the most popular channels on F2 as long as possible which is nice. Like the network stations and HBO.

I noticed that too. My take is this gives Shaw Direct more time to build up an 8xx receiver stockpile for the majority of those aren't subscribing to those "specialty" channels, while transitioning the smaller group of subscribers who have them.

I wonder what the subscriber losses will be once it's all done. Especially when the Sale of Shaw to Rogers is also in the mix at the same time.

Yes, and now we know that we should have at least 4 months to trade in 6XX series receivers for 8XX series receivers.

My Brother already did that, as we expected the demise of F2 to occur a bit earlier. Shaw will offer "Free Rentals" (so they retain ownership of the new receivers) and you get to recycle your old 6xx units when they become boat anchors. (They don't ask you to ship them in exchange - at least if you own them - as we do.)

That's my take on it. There's no economic point in converting F2 to HEVC. The remaining channels during the migration will just stay as they are until Shaw stops sending any data stream to F2 when all have moved to G1.
