Time to re-do channel packages as my grandfathered package has ballooned to stupid pricing.

I have been looking at the alternatives. At this link, the 'MEDIUM' package lists 162 BASE channels - but when you open up the requester, I only count 81. Am I missing the fact that they are including 30 CBC, CTV and GLOBAL feeds, etc.?

The ** asterisk showing when viewing the 'BASE' channels notes 'Not all channels available in all provinces' - is there a link/page to see exactly WHAT channels are for Ontario viewers, or do I have to grin and bear a phone call....

You could always ask to talk to their customer loyalty team and request a lower rate. It will bring your monthly bill down without having to go to one of the new packages. The last time I asked, the discount was maybe $20/month, but watch your bill for the expiry date since you have to call back every year and request a new discount.

My grandfathered package is comparable with the new packages if I look at what channels are included. What I don't like about the new packages is that many channels that were once standards (like Vision TV) are now addons that you have to buy for $5 each.

yeah, I’d prefer to just leave it alone, but it bugs me when I have to call every quarter because of promos being disabled...

@tvmaster - you'd be looking at the Timeshift Theme Pack + US Networks (2 sets due to the Timeshift inclusion) + the sports listed in Medium today. Then, your 30 chosen channels.

I think my current package used to be called 'Titanium', but several channels have disappeared from that package while the cost has gone up. Do you know when the Shaw web site pop-up windows will accurately show channels within each package, for example the 162 channels in 'Medium' - will it be a while before that's fixed?
Thanks :)

Got notice that my package is going up $4. They used to do increases in January like clockwork and now thy have advanced the date with ridiculously high increases on top of an earlier date.

These guys are seriously pricing themselves out of the market.

Yes, my rates have gone up more than $20 in one year. That’s quite a bit, and can’t really say the product is any better, if anything, the signals seem weaker and video compressed. I’ll be dropping services for sure.

I got hit with another $3.00 increase starting in August.... Not sure its a good idea to continue with these $3.00+ prices increases every six months Shaw.... People now have more options to watch TV.
I think my time with you is coming to an end...

Hi. When did Shaw’s customer service Chat and phone support start ONLY working between 7am & 10pm? I used to call late at night because I could get through faster, and it was easier to have detailed discussions. Is Tech Support still open 24/7?
Which number is best for changing plans, packages, channels etc., 1-888-554-7827?

The rate increase every 6 month does get annoying. For me maybe more so that every channel is $5 as an add-on. Their cost is what they pay the broadcasters and increases for them tied to contracts they have, this is not going to go up precisely every six months and the channels do not cost the same. They've clearly determined that annual (or bi-annual) rate increases are necessary to make a profit but these increases are not tied to any particular change in programming costs. This said, Shaw has the right to set their rates based on what they feel is appropriate. They need to stay competitive but also need to make a profit. Overall, their service and support is the best that I have experienced and their rates are very competitive.

20 years ago you could buy individual channels for what the channels actually cost. I remember adding MSN for 88 cents. Then the pick 1/pick 2 addon where you could add channels for a couple of dollars extra, but this was before the changes to the CRTC regulations forcing everything to be pick and pay. It was expected that unbundling and having more choice meant paying more. It's unfortunately that people didn't see this that the effect of forced unbundling is that 1 channel unbundled is the same price as 3 channels bundled. I've held on to my grand-fathered package because it includes all the bundles. I just wished that I had kept a couple of the addons that are no longer available.

I have a large family and everyone has different channels that they like. Paying a la carte for programming would make it impossible to pay for television in my home. I set a budget many years ago of $200/month for satellite and have rarely gone over this. I find that despite rate increases the cost for many of the channels has gone down. I routinely confirm what I have and make changes based on current deals, watching habbits of my family, and other factors. I often cut back programming in the summer and then increase it again in the Fall. There are more choices now but the price of cable TV or optic TV or even Amazon channels would be no better.

Currently I have:

Bilingual Ultimate Choice $116 (includes English and French essentials and all theme packs. There are only a handful of channels that I do not get.)
Selection Radio $1 (don't really need this but it's a dollar and means I have all the audio channels.)
World & Adventure Theme Pack $8 (I wish that I had kept HD Plus & HD Extra since I would have Discovery Velocity for a couple dollars extra in the bundle but still a good price for 4 channels.)
Superchannel $10 (I usually get this 1/2 price for 3 months and then cancel it. This package used to be $16.)
Movies Plus $18 (This hasn't really increased in years, and now includes Movies Extra at no additional cost which just brought my monthly bill down $4)
Time Shift $8 (SD is pretty liberal in giving the $7 discount. I've never paid more than $1, in fairness all the locals used to be in the English essentials.)
WWE $14 (This was $11 when it launched - it's gone up about $1 every year, Pay per view events used to be $50 or more a month)
Total cost before discounts $175 + taxes

I am finding that my family watches a lot more Netflix and Amazon Prime now than we do regular television. We recently bought a FireTV and had to relegate our satellite receiver to a composite port rather than HDMI port. I understand why many people have gone away from conventional television but I am not ready to cut the cord. I'm still deciding where Shaw Direct fits in since 50-70% of our viewing is online. I wish that Shaw Direct had a better receiver (whole-home PVR, Netflix/Prime/CraveTv straight from the box, modern interface, etc) but I will stick with Shaw Direct for the foreseeable future.

oh, sorry, now I see it's the French language radio pack. got it.

A CSR told me the English Radio package was $2.99 - anyone want to confirm that's correct?

The same CSR also said that the U.S. Superstations (KTLA, WPIX, Peachtree, etc.) had their own package price of $5, but if you ordered CRAVE + HBO then they are included in that package. Truth?

And, if you order the Radio Package that's $8.00, are the Stingray Video channels (Loud, Retro, Jukebox, Vibe) included, or are they always a separate charge?

If anyone knows it would be a big help, as phone support can take hours :)

Thanks

Yup. Choice Radio and Selection Radio are different. Choice Radio is included at no charge in the package I have. Selection Radio is just the 4 montreal stations for $1.

Superstations is included at no charge with Discovery Velocity or in Movies Plus or Crave TV.

Selection Radio is $0.99 while Choice Radio is $2.99. The weird thing is that all of the Selection Radio channels used to be included in Choice Radio except for one.

I regularly listened to one of the included ones in Choice Radio and then it disappeared one day. They told me it had something to do with a channel move on the satellite but this is hogwash as they could certainly have retained the same line-up.

These channels are redundant today in any event because you can just listen online.

I don't know which channel package you have but I have the Small package which allows me a choice of individual channels. The good thing is that you get the three Stingray video channels as one channel (one choice). This makes the channels pretty cost effective.

They would be part of the Pick Pack selection component (15 channels for Small) - all 4 Stingray video channels count as one pick.

Can you tell me when they would be included with other plans, aka are they auto-included with Medium or Large, or included with the $8.00 Music Theme Pack (which includes some Video channels)?
