The conversion of the existing MPEG-2 HD channels is probably more of a Shaw Broadcast decision. All the cable system headends would need to upgrade their equipment. WWE Network is coming to Shaw Direct and will likely have an SD and HD signal.
Gol TV does have an HD feed but not on Shaw Direct. Both Gol TV and NHL Network are on MPEG-2 8PSK 38MB/sec transponders. All of the MPEG-4 transponders are 8PSK 45MB/sec transponders. There is still some room on some of the transponders on Anik G1 and I would expect that any new channels will likely go there for now. Shaw Broadcast is going to have to start changing the FEC rate on some of the Anik F2 transponders and start converting channels from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4. Where this is on Shaw Broadcasts timeline is anyone's guess.
All modern receivers have RF Out, Composite and HDMI so any of them can be connected to any TV. The issue with Shaw Direct is they do not call the shots on which channels get carried. Shaw also has a commercial distribution arm called Shaw Broadcast which distributes signals to many cable systems in Canada. They dictate what gets carried on Shaw's transponders. This is why Shaw's HD channels on Anik F1R and F2 are still MPEG-2.
It sounds like the current Movie Central slots will simply be replaced with west feeds of TMN, MExcess, MFun, TMN Encore 1 and TMN Encore 2. I would expect Shaw Direct customers might get C+I HD, fyi HD and DIY HD soon. They are now on Bell and they are coming to Rogers and Source Cable in the coming weeks too.
Exactly; the whole channel request form is just smoke and mirrors. As I said in another thread, I find it rather amusing that the only provider with a channel request form is the one with the least amount of channels.
I believe Anik F2 will only have a few active transponders after the transition. Most of the channels will be on Anik F1R and G1. Shaw Direct might make use of some of the transponders for PPV/Sports PPV and possible on-demand content.
CP24 HD wont be added until 2019 when most of the current SD only channels will be converted to HD only. Starting in the spring of 2017; Shaw Direct will begin transitioning all customers to MPEG-4 equipment and each year more and more SD and HD channels will become HD only. Most of the HD channels currently not carried by Shaw Direct wont be added until 2019.
Just saw the notes about the TMN East/West additions depending on your location in the country. Is it just the HD west channels that became available in the east? Also for those that live in the west are you now seeing TMN3 HD East? By the looks of it, TMN1 is still only East or West depending on where you are and East still only has TMN Encore 1 HD while the west has TMN Encore 1 & 2 HD. Is this correct?
