Okay. I have a head scratcher here, and it's really frustrating. I can't begin to even theorize what's causing this.

I bought the LG 50PJ550 Plasma (50"). Within a couple of weeks I started having the Picture disappear for 1 or 2 seconds. It happened essentially randomly. It could happen once every 10 minutes or so.... it could happen every 20 seconds then fix itself. Other times it wouldn't happen.

I was running my sound through the TV too (through HDMI, then Optical Out). The sound also cuts out. I made sure I had the "info" screen on when it happened, to see if the screen was actually going dead. It's not. It still says "HDMI 1" in the corner, but the "720p 16:9" disappears.

So essentially it seems to be losing the signal from the source.

This was my Xbox 360. So the first thing I did was switch to another HDMI port. It would seem to fix the problem, but it would randomly happen again, sometimes to my Digital Box (Cisco 8642HD), and sometimes to my Xbox. I tried different configurations of cables and inputs, but could not consistently reproduce the issue or figure out the source of the problem. I returned the device to Futureshop, and exchanged it for the same.

Now, 60 days later (ugh), it started happening again this morning! On completely NEW HDMI cables since the last incident, my Cable Box is cutting out in the exact same way every 10 seconds or so. It's completely unwatchable. I immediately switched HDMI ports, but this time the Cable Box is continuing to do the same thing on the new input.

I've turned on the Xbox (which is now on the Cable Boxes old input) and it ran fine for about 20 minutes. I went back to my Cable Box and immediately tried a different HDMI cable (the Xbox one), and it's immediately doing the same thing.

So.... based on the most RECENT glitch, it seems not matter what cable or input..... which would normally suggest the cable box. BUT, thanks to my previous issue (granted on a different TV) I have good reason to believe that's NOT the case. In fact, the issue was much more prominent on the Xbox last time.

But unless there's actually sporadic defects in all the ports, I can't even begin to guess what the cause is. It would seem to be any given device, on any given port, which any given cable.

If it continues, I guess my next course of action is to replace the Cable box (I don't have another in the house)... but again, based on my last TV Set, I'm not optimistic.

Sigh. Any Possible thoughts? And if you've read this far... thanks.

Update#1:

I tried the cable box on another TV, and there were no issues.

I've returned the box to the problem TV, and it's been on for a few minutes now with no issues... possibly simply the act of unplugging the device may have fixed it.

The most rudimentary fix, I know. I should have probably tried that first. But the reason I couldn't get my head around any possible causes was because the same issue effected my last TV on multiple devices, not just the box.

But I think that must have been a completely separate, coincidental incident, even though the symptom was identical.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for now and hope that was it.

First thing in troubleshooting HDMI problems (which this sounds like) and many connectivity issues is to turn everything off for 30 seconds then reboot.

probably solves about 90% of the problems!
