Hey guys,

Just moved into a brand new house and had Sasktel Max installed. A 2Wire 3800HGV-B was installed in the basement and it's running two ethernet connections out of it going into the main floor living room wall jack and the upstairs bedroom wall jack. I have a DVTR in the living room and a regular box in the bedroom. What I am wondering is if I can install a switch in the living room at the wall jack and have the DTVR connected to the switch? I want to be able to connect my HTPC and PS3 into the switch as well.

Will this work or does the DTVR have to be connected directly to the 2Wire?

Also does the DTVR support gigabit ethernet?

That shouldn't be a problem. Some MTS customers that have the same equipment have successfully used a switch. Sasktel may not officially support it.

The VIP1216 is 10/100Base-T Ethernet. An HD stream is less than 10 Mbps so there is no need for gigabit.

I've got my DTVR running thru a switch

also connected is my HTPC, Hava, and xbox 360

my upstairs box is also on a switch, connected with upstairs htpc


basement always works flawlessly, but the upstairs one has issues when the htpc is on too

only difference is the upstairs switch is a netgear, downstairs is SMC

I've had similar experience with Netgear switches. I replaced a cheap Netgear with a bit more expensive SMC switch and solved all my problems.

Sucks when you only have a single Ethernet port to use, but four devices that need to use it.

You can install a switch if you want but you may run into pixing issues if your other devices saturate the link between the switch and the modem. As a general rule, the DTVR should always be directly connected to the modem.

as long as it's a decent switch, it should be fine (but yes, it's recommended that any HD box is directly connected to the 3801)
