Just got the HLR4264W, great deal at BB for 1999$,wasn't gonna get the extended warranty,but... 280$ later I did, sales manager sold me with the "16:9 chip is new so...." anyways so far all is well, except a slight wineing noise. It doesn't seem to be there all the time, and not just when it's been on awhile either. So would this be a fan or color wheel? Do they all do this? It's not really loud but once you've noticed it ,it kinda bugs ya. Also haven't got HD tv yet, next weekend, but I'm pleasently surprised how good normal tv looks. Anyhow any help would be great thanks. Steve

Samsung DLP HLR 5064 Humming Noise

Here is interesting story about noise from HLR 5064 and I would like to know others’ opinion:

We bought Samsung DLP HLR 5064 sometimes in October 2005. After few days we started noticing humming (high pitched whining) noise from the TV. It was noticeable when watching at low volume, or especially on mute. It is similar to what sometimes we hear from noisy fluorescent tube light !! We can hear it from 7 feet away if everything else is quite in the house.
Other than noise everyone in the home loved picture quality, sound etc.

On visiting Samsung web site I realized that it could be from cooling fan or color wheel.
(I concluded that noise is from color wheel based on detailed observation. When TV is turned off, the noise stops 3 or 4 seconds later. But the cooling fan continues for another 60 to 90 seconds & then it stops. If you stay close to TV you can hear click sound when cooling fan turns off)

I complained to The Bay from where we bought TV. They sent out technician who suggested that they need to take TV to shop & replace color wheel. I was not happy about a brand new TV getting repaired. Hence I complained to Bay and asked for replacement. After some dithering they agreed, however due to Christmas rush they could arrange it only in the New Year.
Finally I got brand new replacement HLR 5064, but this one also makes exact same noise. (may be slightly lower noise), but it still bugs me.

Question is: Are all HLR 5064 make this kind of high-pitched humming noise? Samsung claims that their color wheel has air bearing and is ultra quite!! Or may be I got two defective pieces. (first TV was made in August 2005 and new one in November 2005, both Made in Mexico) What about other DLP TVs?

I would appreciate other DLP / HLR 5064 owners’ opinion.

Also have a HLR 5064 and haven't heard anything like this. Just ran down and checked. With volume off completely can hear "something" from 6ft away. When right beside/head down I can hear the fan and the colour wheel that turns before the fan when powering down. Could not distingish between the two without getting right beside the tv. Also heard some grinding type noice as wheel came to a stop. No way I could hear it with the volume on low and sitting 10ft away. Maybe now that it has come to my attention it will start bugging me :) at least have not been tricked into looking for rainbows and only seen it once on the thx calibration screen and looked away and hit next fast :p

Bought the tv Dec 23 Sept 2005 build date. Any body know of better builds or when they started making these?

HLR4264 bought July/05, BB in Calgary

exactly what I experienced with my HLR4264. But It is too late for me to know this issue. My TV is out of warranty now.
I did think it is normal operation noise when I heard that. Shame on S! I was cheated!
