Samsung has announced that it is releasing a software update in response to the recent battery charging problem found in their latest smartphone.

The company’s Galaxy Note 7 phone has been found to explode upon charging and has been recalled.

Samsung has said they will issue replacement phones to those customers worldwide who have already purchased a Galaxy Note 7, which was released on August 19 th of this year. The release of the new software say some reports, indicates just how urgent Samsung feels the problem is.

The software is an update for the new phone that stops the device from charging beyond 60 %, which will hopefully prevent further overheating and explosions.

“We plan to carry out the Galaxy Note 7 software update starting from 2 a.m. on Sept. 20,” Samsung said in a statement. “This is a measure we are taking for our customers’ safety but we apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

The update applies to phones bought with the first release of the Galaxy Note 7, and not replacements, which will be available from September 19 th .

Reports indicate that Samsung is trying its best to figure out what went wrong in the design of the phone to cause the fatal flaw. The exact cause is not known, but the company has said it believes an error in production put pressure on plates in the batteries, bringing negative and positive poles into contact. This mistake generated excessive heat, leading to some phones catching on fire when charging.

Earlier this month, the U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that airline passengers should not turn on or charge Galaxy Note 7 phones while in flight, plug them into flight entertainment systems where USB ports are available, or even stow them in their checked baggage.

The FAA has not ordered airlines to take action, but many companies agree with the advised precautions.
