thanks for your replay eljay. no i din't try that, i did went into screen resolution and selected "connect to a projector" and then extend and also duplicate. i also went into the graphics properties and multiple displays. i will have to try the fn and f4 option and see what happens.

thanks 57, i am able to connect my laptop to the tv and watch it that way, but then i have to use optical or rca cable for the sound. i want to be able to connect directly to the avr then out from there to tv so i can take advantage of the sound quality.

Try using one of the known working HDMI inputs on the AVR. Try resetting the AVR to default settings (usually outlined somewhere in the operating manual). Try changing the startup order.

How long are your HDMI cables to the AVR and from the AVR to the TV? What make/model/gauge are they? Here's the HDMI Issues FAQ and things to check at the bottom.

I've had bad experiences with Acer with audio and video through HDMI. Sometimes I had to reboot the laptop to get either audio or video, mostly audio that gave me the problem.

I reformatted and installed Windows 7 but have yet to try plugging laptop into pre-pro. Maybe an experiment tonight.
