A new cross-Canada study indicates that consumers rate Rogers as worst overall when it comes to reliable network connectivity.

The Canadian Wireless Network Quality Study, conducted by J.D. Power and Associates, is based on responses from more than 13,000 wireless customers who used their phone in the previous 48 hours over the course of two different time periods: October-November 2014 and March 2015.

The study looked at three different areas of network performance: calling, messaging and data. Network issues were measured as problems per 100 (PP100) connections, with a lower score indicating fewer problems and greater network performance.

On average, the study found that the highest number of network problems occurred with data (14 PP100), calls (13 PP100) and messaging (10 PP100).

The study also surveyed which companies Canadians rated best in terms of problems per 100 connections, dividing the data between three geographical regions: West, Ontario and East.

Sasktel won out in the West with a rating of 8 PP100, performing well in call quality, messaging quality and data quality. Telus was ranked second, followed by Bell, MTS and Rogers.

In the Ontario Region, Bell ranked first with a rating of 9 PP100, performing well in both call and messaging quality, while Telus ranked second, performing well in call and data quality. Rogers actually came third in Ontario, with WIND Mobile coming in last with a stunning 16 PP100 in contrast with Rogers’ 10 PP100.

In the East, Videotron ranked first with just 6 PP100, the best score received by any wireless carrier in the country. The company scored well on all three measures of call, messaging and data quality. Bell was ranked second in the East, followed by Telus and Rogers.

The study also looked at different smartphone brands. Among consumers with 4G-compatible devices, 13% of LG owners said their data speeds were faster than expected, followed by 11% of BlackBerry owners, 9% of Samsung users and 8% of iPhone owners.
